Peter Gene Hernandez, known professionally as Bruno Mars, was born in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1985 to parents of Puerto Rican and Filipino descent. He moved to Los Angeles after high school to pursue his musical career, signing with Atlantic Records in 2009 after an unsuccessful stint with Motown Records. Mars became recognized as a solo artist after co-writing popular songs for other artists like "Nothin' on You" by B.o.B. and "Billionaire" by Travie McCoy. He has won Grammy Awards for his solo work and is known for his carefree, optimistic lyrics though some of his songs explore darker themes like failed relationships.
