milion people. It is located on the
northern shore of eastern Java alond
the edge of the Madura Strait.
Surabaya is locally believed to derive
its name from the words “sura” or
“suro” (shark) and “baya” or “boyo”
(crocodile), two creatures which, in a
local myth, fought each other in order
to gain the title of “the strongest and
most powerful animal” in the area
according to a Jayabaya. Now the two
animals are used as the city’s logo.

dent from Serbia.
In September 2013 I have
stayed in Surabaya for three
weeks and
I want to share my experience
with you.
Let me tell You my story
4. Sampoerna means “per-
fection”.
The factory is built on a
foundation of tobacco and
cloves. The company is one
of the oldest as well as one
of the largest manufactur-
ers of kretek (tobacco and
clove) cigarettes, a uniquely
Indonesian product.
The museum is very famous
in Surabaya. It offers a
unique experience for visi-
tors. You can hear stories
about the history of the fam-
ily and the business. Also,
you can see the process of
hand-rolled production by
400 workers in one part of
the museum, buy some sou-
venirs in the souvenir shop,
visit an Art Gallery, or take
a break in a lovely café that
is decorated in a combina-
tion of art deco and a dash
of history. The café offers a
wide selection of delicious
Indonesian, Western and
Asian dishes.
There entrance is free of
charge, so the museum is
open to all visitors.
The English speaking staff is
friendly and helpful, so Eng-
lish tours are also available.

5. The Museum is located
below the Heroes Monu-
ment. The Monument is the
main symbol of Surabaya,
dedicated to the people
who died during the Battle
of Surabaya on November
10th , 1945.
The hight of the monument
is 41.15 meters and repre-
sents white inverted spike.
You can learn a lot about the
history of Battle for the In-
dependence in this Museum.
Indonesian people are very
proud of the victory for the
independence, so the Inde-
pendence day is celebrated
every year on 17th August,
starting from year 1945.
During the celebration of
the Independence, local
people are decorating the
streets with colorful flags.
Besides as the big monu-
ment for the same purpose,
in some famous places as
battlefield at that time, have
been made a heroic statue
like Jayengrono garden (Red
Bridge), Plaza Contong, in
Tais Nasution street (Sharp-
pointed Bamboo), Foreland
and in Kombes Pol. M . Duri-
yat street.

6. T his museum is managed by the marine military. By the type
of the museum collections, it is classified into the museum of
history.
Collection of the museum includes equipment for boats, airplanes
and an other stuff from army. Also, inside u can find medals of
honor, planetarium, telescope, missiles and Navy Heroes photos.
The Museum collects and displays health historical items since
the earlier time until now. The purpose of this museum was
built to save and preserve objects of historical value.
The most interesting part of the museum is the alternative medi-
cine, that was used during the treatments .
Unfortunately, all explanation are on Indonesian language, and
there are no English speaking staff or guides.

8. Kenjeran beach is located in Kenjeran district in the east top Surabaya. The park is
divided into two beaches, Old Kenjeran and New Kenjeran.
The Old Kenjeran is reserved for enjoying the panorama of the beach, fishing, sailing, and buying
sea fishes, while in New Kenjeran you can do sport activities such as Tennis, Horseracing, Motor-
bike, Racing, Swimming, Fishing, playing in Playground, or wisit Aquapark.

The one and only beach in Surabaya. The beach at Kenjeran
has a very small waves and black sand.
Also, in New Kenjeran you can find places to
worship.
The available facilities of this area are; restau-
rants, toilets, hotels, temples, souvenir stores,
and message house.

9. Kenjeran Beach is an amaz-
ing place for
experiencing breath-taking
sunsets
Formerly, Kenjeran Beach is a very beautiful
beach in the north Surabaya, but now the
cleanliness in that beach begin to befouled
because of the people around that beach
did not keep that beach clean.
The soil of Kenjeran is from mud.
The colour of the sea is brown from sand
and mud, and the beach is covered in mud,
so that’s why swimming is not recom-
mended here
10. Surabaya is a synonyme for a good

13. The best way to meet Indonesia is to get together with local
people
The Indonesian Constitution guaran-
tees freedom of religion. However,
the govetnment only recognizes six
official religions (Islam, Prostestanitism,
Catholicism, Hinduism, Bugghism and
Confucianism.
Foreiners are advised to respect the
major Indonesian religion, and rulers
especially the women, who are adviced to
cover their shoulders and knees.
People are really amazing. Even though
most ov them don’t speak English, but
they would try to help you in every way.
Indonesian language isn’t a difficult lan-
guage, so you can easily learn the basics.
As a foreiner, be prepared to be asked
for taking a photo with them, and being
welcomed everywhere with a big smile

14. Indonesian cuisine

Indonesian cuisine is considered as healthful
cuisine, because ingredients are fresh vegeta-
bles, legumes, fruits, grains, herbs and sea food,
but also chicken, duck, pigeon and cow meat.
The foundation of Indonesian meal is rice, usu-
ally only boiled. Indonesian people love spicy
and hot meals, but if you don’t like it, don’t
worry, they can also prepare non spicy food if
you politely tell them “Tidak pedas terima kasih”
which means “Not spicy, thank you”.
Nasi Goreng (fried rice) is the most famous
dish in Indonesia. Other delicious dishes
are Mie Goreng (fried noodles), Ayam Goreng
(fried chicken), Gado Gado (vegetarian), Ikan
Goreng (fried fish), Nasi kuning (yellow rice),
Soto (soup), Sate (grilled meat with peanut
sause) and combining dish with Sambal sause
and crunchy chips called Krupuk. For desert you
can have some Terang Bulan (similar to pan-
cake), Pisang Goreng, or other traditional cakes
you can find on traditional markets.
Delicious Indonesian food varies greatly by
region and has many different influences
from India, Middle East, China and Europe.
