2. Have you seen this bus?
Everywhere in Bangalore, it is easy to see the Big10 bus.
But do you know the story of this bus? And do you know –
we can make the entire bus system as good as the Big10
bus, if we elect the right people as our public
representatives.
3. Dr Ashwin Mahesh is the man who
had the idea for the Big10 bus.
He had a simple idea. There are 10 big roads from
other cities to Bangalore, covering all directions –
Hosur Road, Bannerghatta Road, Sarjapur Road,
Kanakapura Road, etc. On these 10 roads, he suggested to BMTC that
we should run brightly coloured, easily visible buses from far outside
up to the city centre. The buses should be frequent – passengers
should not spend much time waiting at the bus stop. They should be
able to plan their trip with confidence that they can complete it on
time.

good ideas that can improve our lives.

4. A city of great lakes?
There are 183 lakes within BBMP’s boundary, and more
than 200 other lakes surrounding the city. If we cleaned
them up and maintained them properly, Bangalore should
never have a water problem. To achieve that, we need the
right leaders.
5. Ashwin Mahesh is the man who
figured out how local communities can
help maintain lakes.
The easiest way to take care of the lakes is to
involve the local communities. For many years,
BBMP and BDA tried to take care of the lakes themselves, and failed.
Many were encroached, and contaminated by sewage. Then Ashwin
and others worked on Puttenahalli Lake, and showed how local
communities can do it much better. And now, even BBMP is following
this model, involving citizens in maintaining the lakes.

6. Have you seen
Bangalore Traffic
Police work with
smart technology?
In India the private sector is doing very well, and our
companies, especially companies from Bangalore, are
world famous in the technology sector. But can we also use
technology to make Indian society better? And can we use
IT to make government work smarter?
7. Ashwin Mahesh realised that with
just a little training, a lot of work in
government can be done much more
smartly.
As an advisor to the Bangalore Traffic Police,
Ashwin helped build the first traffic management center in the
country. Here, sitting in one place, the police can see what traffic is
like in different parts of the city. And all of this can be seen on a map
on the wall – a complete picture of traffic, updated every minute. As
a result, BTP is the most digital traffic police in the country.

8. Strengthening local businesses
Every local business would like residents in the area to
know about its products and services . Similarly, residents
in different neighborhoods would like to know the shops in
the area, and what they are selling. By bringing the two
together we can build strong local economies.
9. Ashwin Mahesh found that
mapping local shops increases ease of
doing business and is good for
customers.
As an advocate of local economic development,
Ashwin is in the process of mapping all the local businesses in
different wards in Bommanahalli and making this information
available to local residents both in print and online. This will promote
and enhance local business activity, benefiting both shop-owners and
their customers.

10. A city for people, not just cars!
Our streets are not safe for pedestrians and bicyclists.
Sidewalks & bike lanes are poor or do not exist, roads are
hard to cross, and intersections are chaotic. If we improve
the design, the city will be much safer. But for this we first
need leaders who understand the importance of design.
11. Ashwin Mahesh knows how to
make streets safer for pedestrians
and . and bicyclists.
As a member of the BBMP Technical Advisory
Committee, Ashwin has been working to improve the design of city
streets. Vittal Mallya Road, the first road built to these new design
standards, has excellent sidewalks, superb lighting and a strong
road surface. Local businesses maintain it. Ashwin also initiated the
Namma Cycle program at IISc, for bicycle sharing in the campus.
Students, faculty, staff and visitors can travel within the campus in
an environmentally friendly way.

12. You hate corruption. So should your MLA
In recent years, people across India have risen up to
demand an end to corruption. But it will take more than
protests to end corruption. It will take political leadership.
We need to elect leaders who are determined to end
corruption.
13. Ashwin Mahesh has been a leader
in the fight to end corruption
Karnataka was once one of the best-governed
states in India, and we need to restore that pride
once again. Ashwin was one of the founders of Corruption Saaku, and
was with the India Against Corruption campaign from the very
beginning. Ashwin has been fighting corruption for more than a
dozen years. He was one of the designers of the famous Zero Rupee
Note, which anti corruption campaigners use throughout India as a
symbol of their fight for clean governance.

14. Dumping SAAKU!
All over the country, garbage from the cities is sent to
villages. This is morally wrong, and also a sign of bad
governance. Nor is it necessary. If we are responsible, we
can be efficient in managing waste in homes and offices,
and vastly reduce the quantities sent to landfills.
15. Ashwin Mahesh is the man who
pushed for the segregation of waste
Ashwin proposed the Dumping Saaku legislation,
which bans cities from dumping waste outside their
boundaries. He worked with the BBMP to create a new framework for
Waste Management, by which dry and wet waste is segregated at
source, and sent for processing to local waste management facilities.
Ashwin also led a protest walk from Mandur to Bangalore, to demand
that the BBMP stop sending its waste to landfills.

good ideas that can improve our lives.

16. Every family needs a proper place to live
Bangalore needs 10,000 low cost houses to be built every
year. But even the existing EWS lands are being converted
to commercial use. Do you know Ashwin demanded the
Karnataka govt. should stop this and fund construction of
sufficient houses for the poor?
17. Ashwin Mahesh opposed the
conversion of Ejipura EWS lands into
a mall
Ashwin wrote to the Chief Minister and demanded
that at least 300 crores should be allotted each
year for low income housing in the city. As a result of this intervention,
the State government has given BBMP 300 crores this year for
constructing houses for the poor - 50 in each ward. If we consistently
keep up this level of funding for EWS homes, we can avoid large-scale
homelessness.

good ideas that can improve our lives.

18. Using IT for better Governance
Bangalore enjoys the honour of being the global IT hub.
Using this strength, can we build systems that enhance
Bangalore’s governance challenges? Can IT be used for
public participation in local governance? For improving
health outcomes?
19. Ashwin Mahesh has led the way in
creating IT tools for governance and
civic action
Ashwin built the Bangalore Governance
Observatory (www.bcity.in), a platform for citizens to report their
concerns on day to day governance. This is primarily a crowd sourcing
tool that helps to push for better governance. He also created a
platform (www.vaccidate.in) that helps the parents of the newly born
children to get timely alerts for precise vaccination dates.

good ideas that can improve our lives.
