Brexit Aftermath – Getting Ready For 2021
1. Brexit Aftermath – Getting Ready For 2021
It finally happened! On 31st
January 2020, the UK left the European Union. We’re now engaged in a
transition period until 31st
December 2020 while the UK and the European Commission negotiate a trade
deal. Discussions for the rest of the year will be focused on whether the UK and EU can agree a trading
relationship resembling the current arrangement between the EU and Canada (CETA) or one based
around the Withdrawal Agreement deal agreed in October 2019, including the procedure on Ireland and
Northern Ireland.
The government is looking to strike a fair balance. It will focus its attention on agreeing terms in the
interest of both parties - with the objective of building a strong future relationship with the EU,
albeit as a trader in our own right and with the country’s best interests at heart. In either case, the
UK will be leaving the single market and the customs union at the end of this year. Our job as your
logistics and bonded storage provider (and as a leading UK freight forwarder) is to ensure you’re
prepared and that you’re confident in Jeavons’ own preparedness.
We’ve been gearing up in preparation for Brexit since the referendum result, investing in new staff
members, training on customs procedures, upgrading IT systems and obtaining our AEOF status –
ensuring that post-Brexit, we are able continue to operate as normal. For those customers who are new
to clearances the prospect may seem daunting at first – but you can rest assured we have a dedicated
team ready to talk you through the customs process and provide you with the support you need to hit
the ground running.
Bonded storage specialist and UK freight forwarder Jeavons can take all the headaches away. Although
current rules on trade will continue to apply during the transition, we have put together a few points
2. that we suggest you implement in the course of this year – with the goal that you are used to the
process by 2021. We will require additional documentation, some of which we may not be aware of yet.
However, we can advise on essential information and documents, including the following:
• Ensure your company has an EORI number. Currently goods arriving via the free trade
arrangement between the EU and UK do not require customs clearance. However, in either
scenario there will be variations of any agreements which will require importers/exporters to
be EORI registered. This is vital and your first step in preparations. If you do not have an
EORI registration number, please go to https://www.gov.uk/eori to register with HMRC. Your
EORI number should be passed to JEL.
• Establish your Tariff (HS) code for your products and include them on your invoices. It is crucial
that you classify your goods correctly so that any customs declarations are correctly completed.
Every product can be classified under a Tariff (HS) code. This code is important as it will or can
determine the amount of duty you pay; paying too much or too little will cause difficulties with
the authorities and could lead to fines or problems recovering over-payments. Please take a look
at the trade tariff and search the product descriptions best suited to your cargo.
https://www.gov.uk/trade-tariff. Alternatively, you can contact the trade tariff classification team
at HMRC who can advise you on the best classification for your cargo:
classification.enquiries@hmrc.gov.uk
• Request prices for clearances. Depending on the number of clearance requests and current
traffic inbound/outbound to the EU, we can provide the best prices for you based on your
volume and frequency. To find out more, please contact Sales@jeavonseurotir.co.uk.
• ‘Housekeeping’ on documentation. Carry out miscellaneous housekeeping checks on your
current documents. This should include invoices, packing lists, any certificates of origin,
3. licences and more – anything relevant to the product you’re moving. What is the purchase
agreement from your supplier? Do they pay for the transport currently? Are your invoices for
purchase of the material clear and concise? All of these details will make a difference to your
clearance in the UK where clearance is based on freight costs, insurance premiums and invoice
values. Your invoices should be listed with a clearly defined price for each piece and product. It
should also clearly indicate on the invoice if freight is included in the purchase price of the
material.
• Consider intermodal movements via sea. Can you afford a few extra days on transit? To
completely avoid the risk of traffic delays, consider switching your road freight to
inbound/outbound sea containers from/to the majority of EU ports. JEL can provide prices for
45ft PW containers which allow the same loading capability of a standard 44T articulated
vehicle. We can provide UK inland transport via Jeavons’ own vehicles; overseas transport will be
handled by our nominated shipping line. To find out more, please email
Sales@jeavonseurotir.co.uk.
We hope that you find this information helpful. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to
contact Katie Plant at Katie@jeavonseurotir.co.uk. She will be happy to discuss your individual
circumstances in more depth. We look forward to supporting you through the remainder of the
transition period and beyond.
