1. Canada NOW
has Access to a World-Leader in the Build
Environment: BRE Canada OPENS in Toronto
The global built environment is facing an array of
considerable challenges from climate change
and its effects to increased worldwide demand for
resources, overwhelming volumes of waste, and
the age of financial austerity. World leading built
environment research organization BRE has, for
the past nine decades, been on a mission to ‘build
a better world’, to make a positive difference
across the built environment which impacts
so extensively on how we all live, work, heal,
learn and generate wealth. Joining forces with
leading Canadian consultancy Blue Wilderness
Management Group Inc., BRE opens up a new
venture BRE Canada this month.
Now in Canada, BRE aims at ‘Building a Better Canada’
by applying world-class expertise to create better, safer
and more sustainable products, buildings, communities
and businesses.
President of Blue Wilderness Julie Scarcella, who will
head up the new venture said, ‘throughout its history
BRE has focused on generating the new knowledge
and expertise required to underpin solutions to the
perennial challenges and opportunities facing the
built environment. This has enabled consistent and
widespread change to occur in support of Government
policy delivery and in practice by construction
professionals. BRE Canada can pull on a vast pool of
knowledge and apply it to the specific issues faced by
the construction and business sectors in this country.’
BRE Canada will partner with other Canadian organizations to
innovate, test and showcase best practices, new methods and
materials suited to the Canadian built environment through the
creation of a BRE Canada Innovation Park. The development will
become part of a network of BRE Innovation Parks world-wide.

first environmental assessment method
and rating system for buildings and the
precursor of the LEED [Leadership in Energy
and Environmental Design] rating scheme.
The BRE Group of companies – including
BRE Canada – are owned by the BRE Trust, a
registered charity aiming to advance knowl-
edge, innovation and communication in
the built environment for public benefit. All
profits made by the companies are used to
fund research and education in sustainable
development, which includes supporting a
number of University Centres of Excellence.
The BRE Difference:
Innovation in the Built
Environment
‘I am thrilled to be bringing the BRE
business model to Canada,’ said Julie
Scarcella, now Managing Director of
BRE Canada. ‘It builds on the BRE lega-
cy of environmental ingenuity and sets
the course for our vision to implant
sustainability into the mainstream. The
outstanding products and services we
offer are a testament to our commit-
ment to developing effective solutions.
I look forward to advancing meaningful
efforts that tackle our office climate
and clean energy challenges.’
