Brantley Dunaway | Stripper Pop: How Lorde Isn't Conventional Top 40
1. Stripper Pop: How Lorde Isn't Conventional Top 40!
!
In a recent article from Rolling Stone, Foo Fighters Frontman Dave Grohl recounts his first time
hearing the song Royals by Lorde, "When I first heard 'Royals' it was sandwiched between all of
that other stripper pop," he thought, "this might be
another revolution". !
!
Taken aback by the lyrics and content out of the
artist's mouth, Dave Grohl's faith in music was
once again restored. When you look at Grohl's own
track record, you can see the appeal. Grohl was
the drummer for Nirvana, the quintessential voice
of the 90s teen. The voice of disillusionment, and
rebellion. Lorde's lyrics are similarly set upon their
own and out of the box of the other music out
there.!
!
With lines like, "I'm kind of tired of being told to
throw my hands up in the air", Lorde expresses her
disinterest, at least, for common pop references in
a way that would appeal to a Nirvana head. While
Nirvana might have done it more provocatively or
antagonistically, Lorde seems to share the same
suspicion of the world or society as it stands that
Kurt Cobain or any of his cohorts would.!
!
In the humble opinion of the writer of this post,
when I first heard Lorde's music, I too was taken
aback. It wasn't her hit song Royals, but other
tracks like Tennis Court, Ribs, or Glory and Gore.
To me too, I sensed depth and a kind of Brett
Easton Ellis evoking fun, depressive charm. With
lines or track titles such as "White Teeth Teens", I
think you can see where Lorde gets the Nirvana
appeal.!
!
Upon closer inspection of her lyrics, however, one might find them more self involved than upon
first impression. I'll let you go through them yourself, but tell me whether you think her thoughts
are really vibrant, whether they line up, whether they are about her fame and fortune, or provide
insight into the state of the world. You tell me.!
!
Until then, here is a heart warming performance of Lorde acting as the frontman for a reunited
Nirvana to play All Apologies with Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic. This is truly cool. So have
some faith, and remember that no matter the level of insight lyrics bring, that they can catch
your eyes and ears is still beautiful.!
