6. BILLION DOLLAR INK
This BOOK should have been put on paper
several years ago, but our company was too
busy making fists full of money selling inkjet
and laser toner cartridges
cartridges.
Why write it now? We’re approaching
retirement and its time to write down what we
discovered. The Ink and Toner business is not
what you think.
In many ways the ink and toner business
remains a gigantic cloak‐and‐dagger business
because of all the cash money churning around
in the market‐place today.
I would suggest that the printer ink and toner
business is jam‐packed full of activities and
actions that might be considered on the shady
side. Our attempt will be to show you the way
to profits and pride at the same time.

9. BILLION DOLLAR INK
With the Billions of dollars available in the
market‐place you can also imagine that they
are criminals, felons, lawbreakers and just plain
old robbers within the inkjet and laser toner
business.
The driving forces of Hewlett Packard , Canon,
Epson, Brother, Lexmark, Dell and Kodak are
all enjoying a very good reputation and are
highly regarded within industry.

These dependable companies really created
the technology and the market‐place of
printers and cartridges.
With that said, we also feel that these same
companies have subjugated their customers,
demoralized their customers and supply chain
partners through very high prices, recycling
strategies and schemes to k

called the inkjet or laser toner printer that uses
their patented cartridges that the consumers
must purchase over and over again at
extremely excessive retail prices.
Their plan worked so well that it also fashioned
a third party industry. This third party industry
reversed engineered their technology and
became skilled at the refilling of the original ink
g g
or toner cartridges, thus cutting out the big
name brands we mentioned.
Most Ink and Toner refilling companies are
little companies that fill inkjet cartridges out of
a hut somewhere with a sign on the front door.
Their quality is mostly poor because this
cottage industry has older equipment or very
poor equipment, very poor training of
i i i f
personnel, used and worn out cartridge parts,
low cost, low quality ink.
11. BILLION DOLLAR INK
Over the years this cottage refilling industry has
moved from the little hut business plan to the
main street structures that you see today.
Ink refillers moved to main street because
printer customers wanted to save lots of money
on ink and toner cartridges.
Ink refilling companies still had the poor
technology, the sloppy work habits, the used or
gy, ppy ,
patched up parts, very poor output quality but
now they have big store front rents, major
competition across the country, complaining
customers about leaky refills, non‐working
refills, payroll taxes and the infamous franchise
fees they must pay on every gross dollar they
generate. The little cottage business grew up
to the big time due to the inkjet laser toner
customer really wanting a solution. These
refillers struggle today and we would suggest
fill l d d ld
that they fail often.
12. BILLION DOLLAR INK
The refilling trade seemed to have the right
idea and have stolen major revenue dollars
from the big manufacturers. But, something
very important has happened in the last few
years and consumers don’t know it and the
refilling industry doesn’t talk about it and the
big brands, Hewlett Packard, Canon, Epson,
Brother, Lexmark and Kodak would just as soon
us not write about it.
The cottage refill industry that moved to
downtown and malls and now have their own
store fronts still produce low quality, leaking
cartridges, high priced alternatives , very poor
actual guarantees other than their brochures.
The refilling industry has one advantage and its
gone away in the last couple of years. They can
charge less. That’s it and its not enough.
People want to save money b they d ’
l but h don’t
want to purchase useless items.
13. BILLION DOLLAR INK
The refilling trade started something that they
cannot finish. You can easily start your very
own inkjet refilling business, in a couple of
weeks.

the same $200,000 you can have your own
inkjet refill franchise? You have to do
everything their way. You have to pay gross
sales fees forever. You must rent prime retail
space, certain square footage, use their signs,
their boxes, their branding or image maker
brochures, buy their ink, buy their cartridge

You will spend about $250,000 to open up a
first class refilling operation. The money spent
doesn’t make you qualified to operate your
business, refill inkjet cartridges, satisfy
customers, compete on a national scale, out
sell junk cartridge dealers, out run the
counterfeit group selling cartridges and pay the

fact we really see through our research that the

They soon learned that their liberator cottage

The refill industry cannot compete with the

superiority has been the trait of the
remanufacturing industry. Your success will be
found within this new standard of operations
found within these factories.
There is always a warning with any new
production system coming to market. Not all
factories are equal. You have good and bad
factories in the market today. Some factories

Our research and actual findings show there is
only a small number of high quality cartridge
remanufacturing companies in the world.
Lets say right now. When you get passionate
about quality you produce quality. You have to
be addicted to high quality quality. Customer
satisfaction starts with quality, not just price.

This suggestion also comes with a warning. The very mention of
these facts to your friends and family will create some bitterness
and anger so you should keep them hush‐hush. What we mean
by this is that very few people really understand the retail price of

35. BILLION DOLLAR INK
The great illusion or if you prefer the great fantasy is that inkjet
and laser toner cartridge components are expensive.
These giant global companies have created their own daydream
and also the consumer nightmare. Quality ink for your inkjet

printer cartridges wholesales within the printing industry for

about $60.00 to $75.00 a gallon.
If you use a inkjet cartridge refiller service like a Cartridge World,
Office Max or even Walgreen’s you’re getting about $0.75 cents
worth of black ink for $10.00 to $15.00 dollars.
The marketplace has created the false impression that ink is very
expensive and very exclusive and very special to your specific
printer. The complete story tells the whole truth.
The profit margins within the ink and toner business are
considerable and your own home based or commercial based
business income can be significant.

performance is very interesting but will not affect your present day
success. Scientists and engineers, from around the world, study
the physical and natural world placement of ink on some surface,
we’re talking ink placement or toner placement on paper.

The printer and cartridge simply controls the phenomena of
putting ink to paper, using a very systematic device known as your
printer cartridge. This cartridge knowledge is not specific to these
giant companies. The skill to make an inkjet cartridge is not
specific to these companies. Hundreds if not thousands of
companies have the discipline, knowledge, skill and financial
stability to create their own inkjet or laser‐toner cartridge.

Most consumer inkjet printers (Lexmark, Hewlett‐Packard, and
Canon) use print cartridges with a series of tiny electrically
heated chambers constructed by photolithography. To produce
an image, the printer runs a pulse of current through the
heating elements causing a steam explosion in the chamber to
form a bubble, which propels a droplet of ink onto the paper
(hence Canon's trade name of Bubble jet for its inkjets).

Many "intelligent" ink cartridges contain a microchip that
intelligent
communicates the estimated ink level to the printer; this may
cause the printer to display an error message, or incorrectly
inform the user that the ink cartridge is empty. In some cases,
these messages can be ignored, but some inkjet printers will
g g , j p
refuse to print with a cartridge that declares itself empty, in
order to prevent consumers from refilling cartridges. Thus, Epson
embeds a chip which prevents from printing when the chip
claims the cartridge is empty, although a researcher who over‐
rode the system found that in one case he could print up to 38%
more good quality pages, even though the chip stated that the
cartridge was empty
59. BILLION DOLLAR INK
A common business model for inkjet printers involves selling the
actual printer at or below production cost while dramatically
cost,
marking up the price of the (proprietary) ink cartridges. You can
purchase a good inkjet printer at a big retail store for about
$30.00 to $75.00. The ink costs more than the printer, it’s part
of the business plan. Some inkjet printers enforce this product
tying using microchips in the cartridges to prevent the use of
third‐party or refilled ink cartridges.

This is a real picture of an overseas young man taking laser

his country as garbage. He will use 20 cartridges to make one

The lifetime of inkjet prints produced by inkjets using aqueous
inks is limited; they will eventually fade and the color balance
may change. On the other hand, prints produced from solvent‐
based inkjets may last several years before fading, even in direct
sunlight, and so‐called "archival inks" have been produced for
use in aqueous‐based machines which offer extended life.

The microchips can function by storing an amount of ink
remaining in the cartridge which is updated as printing is

conducted. Expiration dates for the ink may also be used. Even if
the cartridge is refilled, the microchip will indicate to the printer
that the cartridge is depleted. For some printers, special circuit
flashers are available that reset the quantity of remaining ink to
the maximum.
You can now buy complete sets of
inkjet printer cartridges for around
$10.00.
$10 00 Why would you buy any
leaky refill?
Refillers are on the way out.
Genuine remanufactured cartridges
are leading in quality, price and
services. Real factories producing a
valid and legal remanufactured
inkjet or laser toner cartridge saves
the consumers billions of dollars
every year.
Because the ink used in most consumer inkjets is water‐soluble,
care must be taken with inkjet‐printed documents to avoid even
the smallest drop of water, which can cause severe "blurring" or
"running." Similarly, water‐based highlighter markers can blur
inkjet‐printed documents.

price caused by OEM markups, there are many companies
specializing in alternative ink cartridges. Most printer
manufacturers discourage refilling disposable cartridges or using
aftermarket copy cartridges because of the loss in revenue.
Inkjet and Laser Toner Refilling companies
are being replaced by real factories. These
high tech facilities are very expensive and
some of the best ones are located in the
United States. You can quickly gain entrance
into the ink and toner business by
representing our new deal ink and toner
factories. Never buy a refilling machine.
Never buy O.E.M cartridges and stop going
to the drug store refilling stations. The
prices are too high and the quality is very
poor.
The very narrow inkjet nozzles are prone to clogging with dried
ink. The ink consumed cleaning them ‐ either during cleaning
invoked by the user, or in many cases, performed automatically
by the printer on a routine schedule ‐ can account for a
significant proportion of the total ink installed in the machine.
62. BILLION DOLLAR INK
You can see the picture below. These
are the tiny micro printed circuit
boards of an Epson printer. The so‐
called smart chips of cartridges.
These chips can now be re‐set by
quality remanufacturing companies
or simply replaced.
Many people, but not enough
people, have bought into the Kodak
publicity and hard sell about their
printers. Pay a lot more for the
printer and the ink is cheap. The
proof is that their market share will
never produce sustained profits.
People clearly want the cheap
printer and the cheap inkjet printer
cartridges. People want both, high
quality printers and high quality
inkjet cartridges. The proof is in,
only a remanufactured factory
cartridge can win the customer.
Third‐party ink suppliers sell ink cartridges at significantly
reduced costs (at least 10%−30% of OEM cartridge prices,
sometimes up to 80%) and also sell kits to refill cartridges, and
bulk ink, at even lower prices.
63. BILLION DOLLAR INK
Freebie marketing,
Freebie marketing,
Freebie marketing, also known as the razor and blades business
model, is the concept of either giving away a salable item for
nothing or charging an extremely low price to generate a
continual market for another, generally disposable, item. Your
inkjet business will grow very quickly when you utilize a very
unique and time‐tested marketing plan called Freebie
Marketing. In fact, it never fails if you have a good product. You
will have a great product. It’s the same plan that Big Ink and Big
g p p g g
Retailers use to capture your money. They will just about give
you a free printer and charge more for ink.
What customers have
not noticed is that Big
Ink reduced the amount
of ink your cartridge so
they could lower the
retail price. That didn’t
work either. Less ink in
your cartridge is not a
bargain. It just proves
the point how they treat
their customers.
Many vendors' "intelligent" ink cartridges have been reverse‐
engineered. It is now possible to buy inexpensive devices to
reliably reset such cartridges to report themselves as full, so that
they may be refilled many times.
64. BILLION DOLLAR INK
Then you can notice that
inkjet printer cartridges k

moving up and up. You’re
getting less ink and a bigger
price. Big Ink and Big Retail
cannot afford to drop the
price to the customer.
A factory direct (remanufactured) inkjet or laser toner
cartridge is the wave of the future. Look at these new deal ink
and toner prices compared to Big Retail. These toner cartridges

have a full factory warranty. Why would any consumer spend

Inkjet and laser‐toner cartridges have the same foundation.
Print lifetime is highly dependent on the quality and formulation
of the ink, as well as the paper chosen. The earliest inkjet
printers, intended for home and small office applications, used
dye‐based inks. Even the best dye‐based inks are not as durable
as pigment‐based inks, which are now available for many inkjet
printers.
