1. NARRATIVE REPORT ON INFORMATION CARAVAN ON
AGRICULTURE FOR YOUTH
Youth Agricultural Information Caravan was launched on October 20, 2021. This
coalition made up of different entities aimed at supporting agribusiness
entrepreneurship among the youth has launched this caravan intended to nurture their
business acumen in sustainable farming.
It has the overall objective of enabling young agripreneurs to gain practical
knowledge, skills, approaches, through peer-to-peer exchanges and learning.
The caravan consists of educating the youth on integrated approach that
simultaneously applies ecological and social concepts and principles to the design and
management of food and agricultural systems.
It was said that the involvement of youth in agroecology is still limited, while their
involvement is crucial for the future, youth participation should be strengthened in
agroecology through policy development and increasing attention for agroecology in
research and education.
Several programs were discussed to support young agripreneurs to apply
agroecological principles and to co-create networks around them thereby contributing
to increased sustainability of food systems and youth employment.
Students are encouraged were encouraged to pursue careers in agriculture.
Young people can start practicing agroecology through beekeeping, organic manure
production, agroforestry, mushroom cultivation and processing avocadoes into oil
among others. Also, waste can become an opportunity to make money by turning it
into manure fertilizer. It is no longer dirt business, rather golden business.
In the caravan the youth were coached to develop agroecological business models
and be connected to opportunities through a business accelerator, among other
interventions.
It will provide a platform for joint advocacy actions and receive commitments from
policymakers on issues that affect youth in agroecology for an improved policy.
It is the young entrepreneurs, as the young generation of farmers who will help our
country to survive and address climate change and be able to feed the increasing
population sustainably the speakers said while stressing the importance of
agroecology.
2. It should be borne in mind that agriculture should be sustainable to provide healthy
and nutritious food to both the current and future generations. That has an opportunity
for the youth who venture into agroecology.
