BOLTED CONNECTION
LAP JOINT
Presented by

• What is lap joint?
When the two members to
be connected together by overlapping then
the joint is called lap joint.
• Types
1. Single bolted lap joint
2. Double bolted lap joint
PROBLEMS
• Design a Lap joint between two plates of thickness 12mm and
20mm respectively. The joint has to transmit a factored load
of 70KN using M16 bolts of grade 4.6 and grade 410 plates?
Solution:
d= 16mm
do=dn= 16+2= 18
fub= 400 N/mm2
fup = 410 N/mm2
ynb= 1.25
e min = 1.7dn
P min= 2.5 d
t = 12mm
(thinner plate thickness)
a) Design Shear Capacity of bolt:
The bolts are in single shear since the top plate is only
12mm it is assumed that shear plate is through the threaded
portion and Nn=1 and Ns=0
Vdsb = Vnsb/ymb
b) Design bearing strength of thinner plate:
Now,
Bolt value = 28.97 KN ( least of above)
Therefore,
Required number of bolts = Factored load/ Bolt value
N = 70/28.97 = 2.41
Say, no of bolt need is 3
