Charles Babbage (1791-1871) was an English mathematician and mechanical engineer who originated the concept of a programmable computer. He designed the Analytical Engine, one of the first mechanical general-purpose computers. The Analytical Engine was programmable with punched cards and capable of being programmed to solve algebraic equations and perform complex calculations. However, it was never completed due to its highly complex design and the limited engineering capabilities of the early 19th century.
