Blood diamonds are difficult to obtain as they require sifting through rocks and dirt which involves hard labor. Those attempting to mine diamonds outside of rules and regulations risk death or amputation as punishment. Blood diamonds are similarly physically composed as regular diamonds but derive additional value from the conflict and human rights abuses involved in their extraction and trade, often funding war and violence.
