Bismuth is a brittle, silvery-green metal that has low toxicity and is used as a replacement for toxic metals. It has unique properties such as being the most diamagnetic metal and having a higher density in its liquid than solid form. Bismuth has many industrial uses including in metallurgy, alloys, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and electronics. While bismuth demand has generally been inelastic with respect to price changes in the short term, longer term elastic behavior has also been observed, such as a recent decrease in demand following a price increase. China is currently the major global producer of bismuth, which is primarily obtained as a by-product of processing other metal ores.
