Dental caries (ECC) is still considered as a serious public-health problem in worldwide, due to its impact
on individuals and communities in terms of pain and suffering, impairment of function and reduced quality of
life. This crucial cause of dental caries affects not only individual health but also the socio-economy as a whole.
The global monetary spending for oral treatment grows at a very significant rate every year. Recently, probiotics
have been suggested for preventing of oral diseases including dental caries.
Dr. SAN is an innovative oral health product that is created based on the objective of improving oral
health in a non-invasive way. The key ingredient of this product contain a novel probiotic strain Lactobacillus
rhamnosus SD11 that has the ability to optimize the balance in oral cavity that can significantly reduce the chance
of having teeth caries. The product comes in the form of lozenges with mint flavor which people are already
familiar with.
Lactobacillus rhamnosus SD11 exhibits several properties to be a good probiotic for promoting oral
health. It could inhibit the growth of cariogenic bacteria by producing a bacteriocin against oral pathogens. It could
adhere well to oral mucosa leading to a prolong existing in oral cavity. And it was a strong antioxidants producer,
which could release the stress condition under oral diseases. Lactobacillus rhamnosus SD11 has also been proven
in clinical trials for having an ability to reduce the level of cariogenic bacteria in oral cavity of subjects after
probiotic consumption.

Probiotics: From Selection to Application for Human and Animal Health

Probiotics has become highly recognized as supplements for humans and animals because of their
beneficial effects on promoting health and well-being. We have proposed the novel probiotic Lactobacillus strains
derived from human including Lactobacillus paracasei SD1, Lactobacillus rhamnosus SD4, Lactobacillus
rhamnosus SD11 and Lactobacillus fermentum SD7.After strains identifying, the strains have been characterized,
based on the main selection criteria for any potential probiotics. It has shown that Lactobacillus paracasei SD1
and Lactobacillus rhamnosus SD11 exhibit antimicrobial proteins against human and animal pathogens such as
cariogenic mutans streptococci, Streptococcus suis, enteropathogenic Escherichia coli etc. Lactobacillus
fermentum SD7 has high ability for aggregation and Lactobacillus rhamnosus SD4 could adhere well to host cells.
In addition, the selected strains are strong antioxidants producers.
To evaluate the effect of a single probiotic strain in prevention of dental caries, randomized, double-blind,
placebo-controlled trials have been set. It has shown that milk powder contained Lactobacillus paracasei SD1 and
fermented milk contained Lactobacillus rhamnosus SD11 could reduce salivary cariogenic bacteria among volunteers who
received the probiotic products resulting in less caries progression.
Lactobacillus paracasei SD1, Lactobacillus rhamnosus SD4, Lactobacillus rhamnosus SD11 and Lactobacillus
fermentum SD7 in combination were given to piglets from birth. It has revealed that Streptococcus suis and
enteropathogenic Escherichia coli were found to be decreased among piglets those received the probiotic product.
Therefore, Lactobacillus paracasei SD1, Lactobacillus rhamnosus SD4, Lactobacillus rhamnosus SD11 and
Lactobacillus fermentum SD7 exhibit their potential to be useful probiotics for promoting health to human and animal.
