Papua New Guinea has highly biodiverse marine life in its deep waters between 100-1300 meters deep, but this region was largely unknown biologically until the BIOPAPUA cruise partnership between the University of Papua New Guinea and the Natural History Museum of Paris. The expedition discovered a high diversity of fish, crustaceans, echinoderms, mollusks, corals, and other marine animals in the deep sea waters of Papua New Guinea. Many of the fish species require further taxonomic study, and some were previously unknown. Samples collected during the cruise are being studied by scientists worldwide, with the results to be published and shared with the University of Papua New Guinea.
