It’s an expensive und exhausting run against time: It takes approximately 2,3 billion Dollars and 12 years to bring a drug to the market. This leaves only 8 years until the expiration of the patent to bring back sufficient return on investments. So far, this has worked out well for the industry but the run is getting steeper every year: on the one hand, it becomes increasingly complex and expensive to develop new drugs, on the other hand prizes are under scrutiny. Hence, the industry is sitting on a time bomb, as the day will come when the returns will not cover the investments anymore and the innovation pipeline will dry out because bringing new drugs to the market does no longer offer any financial incentives.
What can be done about this scenario? Eventually (and hopefully), these projections prove wrong as there is still a lot to be gained by efficiency improvement through digitalizing all along the value chain – after all healthcare still is one of the least digitalized industries. Will this be enough – or do we have to reinvent healthcare innovation in a radical new way?

Realtime prediction of C-section risk for laboring mothersData Con LA
Data Con LA 2020
Description
Over the last 10 years, Cedars-Sinai Health System has made significant efforts to reduce unnecessary C-sections and bring down variability in rates by provider. As part of that effort, providers in the Obstetrics department and data scientists from the Enterprise Data Intelligence team built a model to predict the likelihood that a laboring mother should have a C-section. The goal of the model is to reduce the number of unnecessary C-sections and also to identify necessary C-sections earlier in the course of labor.
Model overview
*Predictions are first made based on factors known within the first hour of admission, including pre-natal visit info, demographics and basic measurements
*The model is then updated every 10 minutes to include new information that may have come in during that time around lab values, cervical exam measurements, medications administered or other relevant events
*The admission based predictions achieved an AUC of 0.78, the continuous predictions have an AUC of 0.93 after the first 4 hours of predictions on validation data
*Models use streaming data to make predictions and return them within ~10 minutes of data being recorded

Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are the gold standard for evaluating therapeutics in patient populations. The data collected during RCTs include a wealth of clinical measures, biomarkers, and tissue samples – the analysis of which can lead to the approval of new medicines that improve the lives of patients. The secondary use of these data can also fuel the discovery of novel targets and biomarkers that support precision medicine, but a lack of metadata standards creates substantial barriers to reuse.
For this talk, I will discuss the challenges that arise when aggregating diverse types of data from a large number of RCTs and present a case study in how to apply (meta)data standards for the scalable curation and integration of these data into an analysis ready form.
Two of the three largest data breaches in healthcare industry history have occurred in the past six months – exposing personally identifiable patient and health plan membership records on 84.5 million individuals – a number equal to the populations of California, Texas, New York and Nevada combined. Both breaches were attributed to hackers from China. These, and other massive hacks in financial services and retail, prompted President Obama to sign an executive order in February calling on government and the private sector to step up the nation's defenses against cybersecurity threats.

Digitalisation Of Healthcare - Towards A Better Future - Free Download E bookkevin brown
Digital health has been around for quite some
time. Advancements in technology, rising
demand for better care, and governments' focus
on improved health economy have contributed
to the digital transformation in the healthcare
sector. Healthcare providers and professionals
are continuously challenged to come up with
innovative and cost-effective ways of providing
effective care and better patient outcomes.
In the past few years, digital technologies
have changed the healthcare landscape into
becoming more patient-centric, with care givers
focusing on engaging patients and improving
their experiences.
According a Deloitte report, global healthcare
spending is estimated to cross US$10 trillion by
2022. As the global healthcare market embraces
digitalisation, innovation has a major role to
play. Healthcare companies have been investing
heavily in digital technologies to drive innovation
and value-based care, while making care giving
more accessible and efficient. Digitalisation results
in better usage of patient data by care givers
enabling them to offer personalised healthcare
to the patients.
