Lesson 6 of the Fall 2011 Bible curriculum focuses on who Jesus is through his teachings about love. It discusses Jesus' parable of the Good Samaritan which illustrates his second greatest commandment to love your neighbor as yourself, and shows compassion for strangers. The lesson also examines Jesus' parable of the unmerciful servant which emphasizes forgiveness and treating others as we wish to be treated. Students are asked to consider how consistently they show mercy to others.
This lesson will:
• Explain why being good makes us happy and being bad makes us unhappy.
• Define being “good” and show its essential characteristic as “living for the sake of others.”
• Show that this definition of being “good” is universal.
• Encourage students to be good, starting from today.

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.
Homily: The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Sunday 2024.docxJames Knipper
Countless volumes have been written trying to explain the mystery of three persons in one true God, leaving us to resort to metaphors such as the three-leaf clover to try to comprehend the Divinity. Many of us grew up with the quintessential pyramidal Trinity structure of God at the top and Son and Spirit in opposite corners. But what if we looked at this ‘mystery’ from a different perspective? What if we shifted our language of God as a being towards the concept of God as love? What if we focused more on the relationship within the Trinity versus the persons of the Trinity? What if stopped looking at God as a noun…and instead considered God as a verb? Check it out…
Evangelization in the footsteps of Saint Vincent de Paul
Bible study lesson #6 (fall 2011)
1. Fall 2011 Bible curriculum
Lesson 6 - Who is Jesus: love
The uniqueness of his teaching
◦treatment of strangers: the good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37)
▪“love your neighbor as yourself” - the second greatest command
▪what would be the (historical or present) equivalent in China of the Samaritan to
the Jews?
▪compassion & help not just toward family, friends, & colleagues, but to strangers
– and even people we don't like.
▪The story is unique: there is no equivalent “Good Samaritan” story in Chinese
philosophy—or in most other societies.
▪how can we show kindness to strangers in our lives? Give specific examples.
◦forgiveness: the unmerciful servant (Matthew 18:21-35)
▪how would you describe the master?
▪how would you describe the servant?
▪“treat others as you would like them to treat you” (Luke 6:31)
▪how do we want people to treat us? How do we treat other people? Are we
consistent?
▪how often do we wish for mercy & grace from people—but judge others and
refuse to show mercy to them?
