3. Edlin Edlin, AgE 17
“The Boys & Girls Club
means opportunity.” Those
powerful words opened Edlin’s speech
when she was nominated for the Club’s
Youth of the Year Award. Bright and full of
energy, Edlin participates in the National
Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship
program at the Club, which teaches young
people the skills they need to start and
operate their own business. She hopes to
attend a four-year university next year.
Edlin believes her life has been enriched
and her opportunities multiplied by
belonging to the Club.
If I could do anything in the world …
“I would give schools more money to
further education.”

4. Roman RomAn, AgE 7
Nicknamed “The
Cartoonist,” Roman has a
remarkable ability to draw any character
from memory and to create his own. He
does all of his artwork freehand and
without adult help. In the midst of an
often chaotic home life, Roman uses his
art to create his own world. His mom
understands, saying their home is also
filled with characters. Through the
Club’s arts and crafts programs, Roman
can develop his art skills in a caring and
safe environment.
If I could do anything in the world …
“I would have all of the people who want
war stop fighting. We should like to play
with each other, no matter what.”

5. Ward WARd, AgE 11
Ward loves having a
club. Growing up in Syria, he
and his friends played in the desert
and in the mountains. After moving
to America, he and his cousins
joined the Club. Ward says he loves
everything about the Club, but his
favorite activity is helping other
people. He is always asking staff
members what he can do to help, and
can regularly be seen sweeping the
kitchen floor. He continues to try new
things and performed in the talent
show as a comedian and announcer.
If I could do anything in the world …
“I would give all the poor people houses
and money for food.”

6. Daniel dAniEl, AgE 13
Daniel makes his impact
quietly. He is patient and kind
and has begun to influence the other
teens at the Club, teaching them not
to judge others before getting to know
them. His peers are now initiating
conversation at the Club, at school and
in other public places. He continues
to learn positive ways to interact with
people, specifically how to not let his
peers and adults influence him into
making wrong decisions. Daniel is and
will continue to be a great leader and
inspiration.
If I could do anything in the world …
“I would start in my community to give back
what it has given to me.”
