It's alsoavailable fornota lotof cash,costingonly£259. However,withthe Lumia930 waitinginthe
wings,the Lumia925 is more difficulttorecommend:it'sstill agreathandset,butsoonto be made
redundant.
15. Nokia Lumia 1020
Nokiaischasingtwothingsin smartphones:the bestWindowsPhone experience itcancreate and the
bestcamera.If those alignwithyourownneeds,thenthe NokiaLumia 1020 mightbe the perfectphone
for you.
The verycapable PureView cameraonthe backbringsoptionsyousimplydon'tgetelsewhere inthe
smartphone world:it'sa greatperformer.The compromise youhave toaccepthowever,isthatthisisa
bigphone,especiallycomparedtoNokia's"other"flagship,the Lumia925, althoughthat'sabout to be
replacedwiththe larger930. The NokiaLumia1020 alsostruggleswithbatterylife if you're usingthe
camera a lotand can get hot wheninuse.

The Moto X doesn'tgoup againstthe flagshipphonesoutthere onthe specsheet,butitstill deliversthe
essentials.The dual-core processoroffersplentyof power,partneredwith2GBof RAMand the 4.7-inch
displayoffersplentyof space toplay,evenif the resolutionisanotch downat 720p.
What youdo get, however,isthe optiontocustomise the exteriorof yourphone (forthose inthe US),

mighthave some mid-range specs,butitdeliversanexperience thatimpressesat£329.
12. Sony Xperia Z1
The Sony XperiaZ1 refreshesthe excellentSonyXperiaZ,bringingyoua powerful handset, with
waterproofing,aslickdesignandalarge 5-inchdisplay.
On paperthe Z1 soundslike itwill be kingof all classes,butthe boostingof the batteryandthe
accommodationof a 20-megapixel camera,swellsthe bodytolargerthan itsrivals,withabigger
footprintthanmanyrivals,butnot quite reachingintophabletterritory.Butif youcan handle the size
there are plentyof treatsin store.
It's a veritable powerhouse,withgreatinternal hardware,soeverythingisslickandfast.Waterproofing
offersanadvantage too.The XperiaZ1 will costyou£479.
11. Nokia Lumia 1520
The NokiaLumia1520 is the bestLumiato date.It bringsWindowsPhone intothe realmof the phablet,
but itdoesit withaplomb,givingyouadevice thatofferssize,powerand a greatcamera performance.

8. Nokia'scommitmenttothe platform,draggingapps - kickingandscreaming - overto WindowsPhone
reallyenhanceswhat'sonoffer,butalsopouringhome-grownfeaturesintoo.
We've beencritical of some of the movesof Windows Phone,andof Nokia,inthe recentpast,butthe
Lumia1520 feelslike the herodevice thatNokianeeded.It'spowerful,it'swonderful touse andit'sthe
rival of Androidpeersthatrule the big-screenphone world.
10. Nexus5
The Nexus5 playsout the pure Google dream, debutingAndroid4.4KitKatand bringingyouplentyof
powerforyour money.There'salsoabrilliantdisplay,whichgivesyouplentyof detail andperformance
to rival some of the top phonesoutthere.
There are downsides,however.We don'tthinkit'sthe bestdesignedphone around,perhapsless
interestingthanthe Nexus4whichcame before itandas istypical of Nexusdevices,the cameraisn'tso
goodand neitheristhe battery,whichisthe biggestdownside.
However,the Nexus5deliversplentyinit'saggressivelypricedpackage at£299, especiallyif powerand
displayare topof yourlistand youhave the reassurance of knowingyou'll be atthe front of the Android
upgrade queue too.
For some,however,the refinementaddedbyothermanufacturerswill bringattractive featuresoutof
the box that the Nexus5 lacksand we suspectit's soonto be replacedbythe next-genNexus.
9. Samsung GalaxyS4
The SamsungGalaxy S4 bringsmore innovationtoaphone that's alreadyat the topof itsgame.The
designoffersflexibilitywhere othersdon't,withaccesstothe batteryandthe optiontoexpandthe
memoryviamicroSD.
Some may saythat there'sa feature toomanyand the designisn'tas inspiringassome otherdevices
like the HTC One,butif you optfor the SamsungGalaxy S4, you won'tbe disappointed.Samsungcrams
a large 5-inch full HDdisplay intoa handsetthatisn'toverlylarge,sodespite goingbig,the size isstill
manageable.
Undoubtedlythe SamsungGalaxy S4will be the topsmartphone choice formanyand sell bythe bucket
load,butrecentlaunchesbringmore raw poweranda more refreshinguserinterface.

9. 8. Samsung GalaxyNote 3
The SamsungGalaxy Note 3 takesthe large device formatandcontinuestorefine it.Inthis2013 model,
there'sa cracking 5.7-inchdisplayofferinga1920 x 1080 pixel resolution,givingyou386ppi.It's packed
intoa frame that measures151.2 x 79.2 x 8.3mm, makingitone of the mostcompact deviceswithsuch

For a longtime the HTC One sat at the top of our BestSmartphoneslist,butnow itfindsitself unable to
defendthatposition.The unique featuresthatmade thisphone greatare now easilysurpassedbythe
newHTC One (M8). That doesn'tmake the original HTC One a lesserdevice,butwithonlya£60 price
difference betweenthe two,itmakesthe oldermodel muchmore difficulttorecommendnow.
It still hasa great displayandthe BoomSound speakersare secondonlytothose on the new handset.
The designisverygood,but the original HTCOne now obviouslylackssome of the specstocompete
withthe latestdevices:itisn'tasfast andthe batteryperformance can'tmatch the top runof handsets
fromthe likesof Sony,Samsungandthe new HTC One (M8).
8. LG G2
LG hasn'thad the smoothestrunof inthe worldof modernsmartphones,butthe LGG2 brings things
back intofocus.There'sheapsof poweron offeranda 5.2-inchdisplaycrammedintoa bodythat's still
fairlycompact:LG has banishedbezels,soyougetmore space to play.
It's a powerful phone withthe latesthardware.The pointisthough,this phone competesbrilliantlywith
the likesof the SamsungGalaxy S4 while offeringamore "Android"experience,throughaslightlyless
customisedUI.The camera isn'tthe best;the SGS4 beatsit easily,andthe iPhone isstreetsahead.

10. Some have expressed dislikeof the rear-mountedbuttons,buttheymake sensewhenyou're inacall
and tryingto adjustthe volume - farmore so,at least,thanside mountedbuttonsdo.
But bestof all,the displayisoutstanding.LCDscreenshave greatdetail,andaccurate coloursthat
AMOLED screenscan't claim.Andthe high-qualityaudiosystemwill blowyouawayif youpluginsome
high-qualitymusic,andsome decentheadphones.
7. Sony XperiaZ2
The Sony XperiaZ2 updatesthe XperiaZ1,stickingtofamiliar XperiaZdesign.Itisslimandsolidlybuilt,
if a little onthe large side,butitdoesoffera5.2-inchdisplayandnew front-facingspeakers.
It's more accomplishedall roundthanthe XperiaZ1: the displayisbetter,there'salotmore powerand
it's betterhandled.The batteryperformance isverygoodandthe cameraproducesgreat results. The
newfrontspeakersboostthe audiodelivery,butitwon'ttouchthe HTC One forspeakerskills.However,
the Z2 featuresin-builtnoise cancellationif usedwithcompatibleheadphones,whichisanice unique
feature.
There'splentyof refinementinthe software,althoughitdoesn't feelasthoughthe Z2 has evolvedmuch
overthe Z1 inthisdepartment,andSonystill seemsveryfocusedonpushingitsowncontentservices
whichcan be a little intrusive.We still thinkit'salittle uncomfortabletoholddue toit's flat,squared,
design,butthere'snodenyingthe poweritoffers.
6. Motorola Moto G
The Motorola Moto G has takena lotof people bysurprise.We've heardthe sentimentsplentyof times
before:performance ataprice,withoutcompromise. Motorola,however,went aheadandgotit right.
The Moto G is a fantasticsmartphone andincredible valueformoneythat'sdifficulttoignore.Witha
price as lowas £100, if you're on a budget,thisisthe handsetto choose.
Take the price outof the equationandyoudon't feel letdown,however.The designisgreat,the display
isexcellentandthere'splentyof powertoo.Yes,itwill be out-performedbyanynumberof handsets,
but those are handsetsthatwill costyoutwice,if not three times,asmuch.
We're reallyimpressed withwhatyougetinthe Moto G. It's a great handsetandno matterwhatyour
budget,if you're aftera smartphone fordailyuse,thenthisphone prettymuchdoesit.It'sfast,the
displayislovelyandthe camerawill give yousome decentshotstoo.

11. 5. Sony XperiaZ1 Compact
The Sony XperiaZ1 Compactis the phone where SonyMobile gotitright.Itblendspowerwith
performance anddesigninahandsetthat will slipintoanypocket.There'snoshortage of devicesatthis
size,butthe Z1 Compactis the bestperformerbya considerablemargin.
Althoughthishandsetdoesn'thave a full HDdisplay,the 4.3-inch720p screenispackedwithdetail and
it doesn'tfeel lacking.ItalsooffersbettercoloursandbetterviewinganglesthanotherSonyphones.
There'sa QualcommSnapdragon800 chipsetwith2GB of RAMand 16GB of storage withthe optionto

Top global smartphone apps, who’s in the top 10
We’ve identified the apps that are actually usedby the 969.49m strong global smartphone
population.
So here is GlobalWebIndex’s top10 of actively usedsmartphone apps, based on the % of global
smartphone users who have taken advantage of the servicesthey offer inthe last month.
It’s no surprise to see that Google Maps is No. 1 Used by 54% of the global smartphone population
in the last month, it’s the go-to solution for lost and confusedconsumers. Apple Maps is nowhere to
be seen but Nokia’s Ovi Maps is used by 9% of smartphone users and ranks No. 11 in our chart.

25. In the No. 2 spot in Facebook’s Mobile App, used by 44% of globalsmartphone users to keep in
touchwith friends, family and brands.
Facebook also has two other playersin the top 10 – of which more later – but Google as well as
taking No. 1, also takes No 3 with YouTube (35%)andNo. 4 with the G+ Mobile App(30%).
Weixin / WeChat makes it to No. 5 and our researchrevealsthat the Chinese-based service is
being actively usedby the 27% of the global smartphone population. It’s an impressive performance
considering that is basically used only in China, Hong Kong and Malaysia.
In at No. 6 is Twitter’s Mobile Appwith a 22% active usage number, closely followedby Skype
and Facebook Messenger, which both score the same active usage number.
Online messaging service What Sapp has now servesthe 17% of the global smartphone
population and takesthe No. 9 spot. Despite massive publicity it attracts, however, it’s worth noting
that Weixin/ We Chat and Facebook Messenger, which both provide a similar service are more
widely used on a global basis.
Finally at No. 10 is Facebook-ownedvintage picture app Instagram, which has been actively used
by the 11% of the global online population in the last month, but growth since Q1 2013 has been
rather stagnant.
I was expectingto see Vine ranking higher than No. 17 but globally only 2% of respondents admit to
have used it in the last month. Whilst its growth is quite encouraging, Vine still has long to go to
catchup with Instagram and is also behind Foursquare, Shazam, Flickr and Yelp.
Apps for smartphones and tablets can be useful both before you leave and while you're
traveling. Most devices are preloaded with apps that can come in handy on a trip (such as
an alarm clock, compass, calculator, weather, and so on). But you can greatly extend your
device's usefulness by downloading additional tools, such as restaurant reviews,
translators, and transportation apps.
While it's convenient to be able to access this type of information, there is a catch: For
many mobile apps, you need to be online to download the latest information. With the
prevalence of Wi-Fi in most corners of Europe, this is generally not a problem — just find a
hotspot and browse away. But if you have a smartphone or tablet with mobile data
capabilities, you can incur outrageously high data roaming fees if you try to access these
apps while not logged in to a hotspot. To be sure you understand your options,

26. I've recommended some of my favorite mobile apps below. All of these are available on
Apple's iOS devices through their app store, and many of them are also available for
Android, Windows Phone, and BlackBerry platforms. I've noted whether they're free or must
be paid for, and whether they're self-contained (Internet connection not necessary after the
initial download) or require ongoing Internet access. While it's possible to download these
apps over any Wi-Fi network, plan ahead and try to grab the ones you want while you're still
at home. This is by no means a comprehensive list. New apps are hitting the market every
day. To find the latest, browse the iTunes App Store or the Android Market (look under
"Travel"), or search for tips on travel blogs and websites.
Trip-Planning and Management
From booking flights and hotels to managing your itinerary, these apps can help you plan
your trip.
Travel Booking: Orbitz, Priceline, Booking.com, Expedia's TripAssist, and Travelocity (free,
Internet) allow you to search for flights, hotels, rental cars, and more. Skyscanner (free,
Internet) helps you survey a wide variety of European budget airlines to find the cheapest
connection between any two points.
Airlines: Each airline has its own app; these usually allow you to search for and book
flights, check in, and track the status of a flight. While you can do many of these same
activities through the airline's website on your phone's browser, the apps are generally
faster and more user-friendly.
Flight Trackers: Plug your flight details into FlightTrack (pay, Internet) or Kayak (free,
Internet), and these apps will keep track of whether your plane is on time. Folks back home
can even track your plane's progress on a map.
Itinerary Organizers: Apps like TripIt (free, Internet) save all your trip details in one
convenient place. Forward reservation emails to your TripIt account, and it automatically
adds them to your itinerary.
Audio Tours, Transit, Restaurants, Money, Weather, and More
The following tools run the gamut, from Europe-specific advice to apps that help document
your travels.
General Europe: Rick Steves Audio Europe (free, self-contained) has hundreds of radio
interviews and dozens of audio walking tours of Europe's top sights, organized by
destination for easy browsing. Download the playlists that interest you and fit your itinerary
before your trip, then listen to them offline as you travel.
Smart Traveler (free, Internet), from the US State Department, includes basic information on
each country, plus travel advisories.

27. Public Transportation: Various subway map apps for the London Tube, Paris Métro, and
others (pay, self-contained) have detailed, digital plans of public transit networks that save
you from having to unfold an unwieldy map on a busy platform. The free, self-
contained MetrO is a handy route-planner for public transit in dozens of European cities, but
does not have maps.
DB Navigator (free, Internet), German Rail's comprehensive train timetables, includes
connections for all of continental Europe. For the UK, try thetrainline (free) or UK Train
Times (pay).
Restaurants and Reviews: TripAdvisor's app (free, Internet) gives you access to millions of
user reviews of restaurants, hotels, and sights (though TripAdvisor ratings should never be
taken as gospel). Some users prefer Yelp (free, Internet), which is just catching on in
Europe; unlike back home, where most Yelp reviewers are locals, European Yelp reviews
tend to come from travelers.
Currency and Conversions: Oanda Currency Converter, Currency, or XE Currency (free,
Internet) instantly tells you today's exchange rate. Measures (pay, self-contained) converts
various European units (metric measurements, clothing sizes, even currency) to American
ones.
Weather: Take a walking tour or hit a museum? You can better plan your day with
the Weather Channel, AccuWeather, and other forecast apps (free, Internet).
Medical Help: mPassport (pay, self-contained) are city-specific apps that direct you to
English-speaking doctors and hospitals, as well as local names for prescription medications.
Journaling: Note-taking apps such as All-in Notes and Microsoft OneNote (pay, self-
contained) let you combine photos, recorded sounds, and written notes to keep a
multimedia journal of your trip.
Translation
These amazing apps are helpful for navigating in a country where you don't speak the
language.
With Google Translate (free, Internet), you can type something in a foreign language (or have
someone speak clearly into your microphone) for an immediate translation. You can also
say or type a sentence in English, and a computer voice actually says the translation (or
hold up the screen to show someone the written translated message).
Digital phrase books, such as Lonely Planet Audio Phrasebooks (pay, self-contained), allow
you to simply press a button to hear the phrase you're struggling to pronounce.
With Word Lens (pay, Internet), you can aim your smartphone's camera at a sign in a foreign
language, and it'll instantly translate it for you (available for Spanish, French, German, and
Italian).

28. Maps and Navigation
With the help of mapping apps, you can navigate Europe more easily than ever. Smart
smartphone users have become accustomed to having local maps at their fingertips and to
downloading route information, including maps, turn-by-turn directions, and estimated trip
duration. But there's a catch to using mapping apps overseas: Since base maps must be
downloaded and continually updated on the Internet, you'll either have to wait until you
reach a hotspot or pay international data roaming fees in order to call up a new map.
To avoid these fees, download a map or driving route when you're on Wi-Fi (for instance,
from your hotel), then use it to navigate all day long. This can be useful whether driving
through Burgundy or walking around Barcelona. And since the GPS signal does not utilize
the Internet (instead, it uses a combination of satellites and cell phone towers to triangulate
your precise location), it will continue to track your location on the map, even when you're
offline.
To download a map on your iPhone, simply punch in the start and end points of your route
or the city or town's name. The map remains available on your phone, and you can zoom in
and out, even if you go offline. Note, though, that maps are downloaded at a fairly low
resolution (you can only zoom in so far before it becomes unreadable); route time estimates
are based on the initial request and don't adjust as you travel; and it can only remember
one route at a time — so you can't switch to another route without a Wi-Fi hotspot or paying
for data roaming. GPS also gobbles battery life, so you may want to bring a car charger.
The iPhone app OffMaps (pay) will store multiple maps for later use. You need an Internet
connection to download maps, but once that's done, the maps are accessible anywhere.
Google Maps for Android phones have a similar capability that lets you download and cache
(save) several maps for use offline (free). For much more fully featured GPS apps for your
mobile phone, check out those from TomTom, Garmin, and other GPS device makers,
though European maps for these tend to be very expensive.
Keeping in Touch
Stay connected to home with these apps.
Social Media: Using Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social networking apps (free,
Internet), you can post descriptions and photos of your trip while keeping track of what your
friends are up to back home.
Internet Calls and Texting: Skype or Fring (free, Internet) lets you make free voice or video
calls over Wi-Fi to fellow users' computers and smartphones, and cheap calls to other
phones. Text Plus andTextfree (free, Internet) work similarly for text messaging (note that
both parties need to have the app installed).

29. News: The New York Times, ESPN ScoreCenter, NPR News, and other news/information
readers (free, Internet) help you keep track of news and scores back home.
File Sharing: Dropbox (free, Internet) saves files from your computer in an online account,
which you can access from anywhere on your smartphone or a computer.
Postcards: Using apps like SnapShot Postcard (pay, Internet), you can snap a photo with
your phone and turn it into a custom postcard, which will be printed and sent via snail mail
to anywhere you want. Various digital postcard apps (including fCards) will let you email
your postcard instead.
New Delhi: Of all the apps available today for different platforms, GlobalWebIndex has listed the top
10 apps most actively used by the 969.49 million strong global smartphone population. According to
data released by GlobalWebIndex, Google Maps is the most used smartphone app, with over 54 per
cent of the global smartphone population using the app in the last month. Apple Maps is nowhere to
be seen but Nokia's Ovi Maps clocks 9 per cent of smartphone usage and ranks No. 11 in the chart.

30. One of the leading digital measurement and analytics companies in the United States
published the top smartphone applications (apps), search engine rankings, and online
video content properties for the latest months of 2014.
Smartphone Apps
The top 15 smartphone apps for February were published by comScore with Facebook
receiving top marks due to its reach percentage. According to comScore, Facebook had
a reach among Apple iOS and Google Android mobile operating systems with 75.7
percent of 100 percent. Google Play ranked second with a 52.1 percent reach ahead of
the Google Search mobile app's 49.8 percent. YouTube finished at fourth place with its
48.4 percent reach while Pandora Radio completed the top five with 45 percent.
Other popular apps included Google Apps at eighth place, or 41.3 percent reach, and Twitter at
No. 14 due to its 22.7 percent reach.
Online Video Content Properties
According to comScore, 187.8 million Americans watched 46.6 billion online content
videos during March, while the number of video advertisement views hit 28.7 billion.
"A video is defined as any streamed segment of audiovisual content, including both
progressive downloads and live streams," noted comScore. "For long-form, segmented
content, (e.g. television episodes with ad pods in the middle) each segment of the
content is counted as a distinct video stream. Video views are inclusive of both user-
initiated and auto-played videos that are viewed for longer than 3 seconds."
The consortium of Google Sites was the top online video content property in the U.S.
with 155.6 million unique views with 11 billion videos viewed. Facebook placed second
with 88.4 million unique views and 4.6 billion videos viewed. AOL, Inc. ranked third due
to 69.4 million unique views and 1.3 billion videos watched. Other notable online video
content properties were Yahoo Sites with 55.7 million unique views and approximately
580 million videos viewed and Amazon Sites' 38 million unique views with 164 million
videos watched.
revealed Google Sites was also the top search engine among the "explicit core" data.
comScore noted "explicit core" searches "excludes contextually driven searches that do
not reflect specific user intent to interact with the search results."

31. Google maintained the top search engine title with an explicit core search share of 67.5
percent, which is unchanged from February's statistics. Microsoft Sites improved by 0.2
percentage points for March, which maintained its second place title with 18.6 percent
of the market share. Yahoo Sites ranked third with 10.1 percent, which is a drop of 0.2
percentage points from February's 10.3 percent. Ask Network finished March with 2.5
percent of the search market share, ahead of AOL, Inc.'s 1.3 percent.
