2. WHAT IS SHOULDER REPLACEMENT?
The shoulder is several joints that combine with tendons
and muscles to allow a wide range of motion in the arm.
Shoulder is made up of three bones – Upper arm bone
(Humerus), shoulder blade (Scapula), collar bone
(Clavicle).
There is a ball-and-socket joint also known as glenoid.
The head of the humerus fits into a shallow socket in
the shoulder blade. When the movement of shoulder
gets restricted, shoulder replacements gets necessary.
Shoulder replacement surgery involves removing and
artificially replacing damaged areas of the shoulder.
The procedure is used to ease pain and increase
mobility.
The shoulder replacement is an alternative for serious
shoulder joint arthritis, osteoarthritis or rheumatoid.

3. CAUSES OF SHOULDER REPLACEMENT
Pain in the shoulder can have
many causes. We might injure it in
a fall or accident, or while playing
sports.
The severe pain in shoulder due to
some of the following factors may
lead to its replacement -
1. Severe fractures of the shoulder.
2. Avascular necrosis.
3. Rheumatoid arthritis
4. Osteoarthritis

4. SYMPTOMS OF SHOULDER REPLACEMENT
Increasing problems with instability or impingement of the soft tissue or
bony structures in the shoulder results in pain.
Following are some symptoms of shoulder replacement -
Severe shoulder pain
Reduced movement or Loss of motion
Weakness in the shoulder
Sensation of pins and needles (tingling) and burning pain.

6. TREATMENT FOR SHOULDER REPLACEMENT
The damaged parts of the shoulder are removed
and replaced with artificial components, called a
prosthesis.
Depending on the type of damage present, there
are different types of shoulder replacement
surgeries that doctor may recommend following
options –
1. Total Shoulder Replacement.
2. Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement.
3. Partial Shoulder Replacement.
4. Shoulder Resurfacing.

7. TOTAL SHOULDER REPLACEMENT
Total shoulder replacement surgery, is considered to
be the most reliable surgical option for those looking to
regain movement and function from a severely injured
or damaged shoulder condition.
It replaces the ball at the top of your humerus with a
metal ball, which gets attached to the remaining bone.
Prosthetics are placed, allowing the patient improved
range of motion.
This surgery is often recommended for those suffering
from extreme shoulder pain and arthritis but it is not
considered a great option for those who have a
damaged rotator cuff- or who plan on staying active.

8. PARTIAL SHOULDER REPLACEMENT
It is also known as hemiarthroplasty.
Instead of replacing both the ball and
socket with prosthetics, only the
humeral head is removed and
replaced with a prosthetic ball.
The natural socket remains in place.
Depending on the condition of the
socket, it may be smoothed or
reshaped to improve movement.

9. REVERSE SHOULDER REPLACEMENT
In a reverse shoulder replacement, the positions of
both the shoulder’s ball and socket are reversed.
The ball at the top of the skeletal humorous is
replaced with a socket prosthetic and the patient’s
socket is then fitted with a prosthetic ball.
The procedure is used most often for patients who
have had a failed total shoulder replacement.
This shifts the core of the joint rotation, which
makes it possible for the other muscles to reduce
the rotating cuff.

10. SHOULDER RESURFACING
When the ball of the shoulder is damaged but
doesn’t necessarily need a replacement, a
shoulder resurfacing may be helpful.
Instead of removing the ball, or humeral head,
completely, a smoothly rounded cap is attached
to the damaged humeral head in order to
improve joint function.
The shoulder resurfacing does not require the
total removal or the insertion of a prosthetic
humeral stem from the natural humeral head.
It may be a great option for resolving pain
without having to replace the shoulder
completely.
