The document provides an overview of Kichwa shamanic traditions in Ecuador. It describes Clever Grefa Licuy, a 5th generation Kichwa shaman who runs an eco-lodge called Ruku Samay to preserve their culture and knowledge. The Kichwa tradition is animist and believes in living in harmony with nature. Shamans act as mediums between the upper, middle, and underworlds, and can shape-shift into sacred animals. Ruku Samay's mission is to share this knowledge through retreats and preserve the rainforest and Kichwa way of life through sustainable tourism.

When missionaries came 85 years ago, and with the oil and lumber companies in the last 50 years, there has been a systematic pursuit and destruction of the ancient forest that was their home. The single biggest challenge affecting the rainforest Kichwa today is the encroachment on their land by oil, lumber, and mining companies, and socio-cultural disintegration.
