The Business Education Council of Niagara (BEC) has helped thousands of people in the Niagara Region find and keep jobs over the past 25 years. BEC offers workshops on resume writing, interview skills, and exploring retraining options, as well as one-on-one support from employment counselors. In its twenty five years serving the Niagara Region,
Business Education Council of Niagara (BEC) has helped
thousands in the community overcome the challenges
of a constantly changing job market.
BEC Employment Services is committed to providing
the tools and support you need to help you find and
retain employment. This includes students looking for
employment after graduation, recently laid-off workers,
or older workers looking to return to the work force and
everything in between.
To get you started, here are some of BEC’s top tips
when looking for a job or making a career change:
1. Be Prepared. It’s important to stay organized and
be ready for anything when job searching. Have a
professional voicemail system in place in case you miss
a call from an employer and set up a separate email
address dedicated to your search.
2. Use Keywords. When applying for jobs make sure
to pick out language that appears frequently within
the employment listing and incorporate them into your
resume. These may be keywords that employers look
for when scanning databases of resumes and may
increase the chances of your resume being seen.
3. Build a Network. Get to know people who can help
develop and enhance your job search. Always keep
your eyes and ears open for new opportunities and
information you can use to your advantage.
4. Get Social. Facebook and Twitter are great tools
to get employment listings first. Companies are using
social media for recruiting more often and it’s an
excellent way to promote yourself.
5. Get Help! The great team of BEC resource centre
staff, employment counsellors and job developers can
help with all your job search needs.

Because... BEC has tailored workshops to help with
every aspect of your job search!
BEC designs workshops that provide resources and tools
you need for every step of your employment search from
summitting your application to your first interview.
For example, Resume Fundamentals workshops teach
the basics of how to build a great resume. Sometimes
clients have really great qualifications but don’t know
how to communicate them to hiring employers.
Having a strong resume is a great start, but having the
proper interview skills to go along with it is essential.
Interview Coaching workshops provide you the
chance to practice interview questions, learn how to
connect with employers more effectively and leaving
a lasting impression.

Because... if you are 55 to 64 and looking to
re-enter the workforce, BEC can help!
BEC delivers the Targeted Initiative for Older Workers
Program (TIOW) which focuses on helping those
workers take the next step toward gettng back into
the workplace.

from 1-3pm that will help you better understand
yourself, your career goals and the job market today.

Because... BEC can help you explore your Second
Career options and get you back to work!
Second Career is an Ontario government program that
enables laid off Ontarians to train for a new job in a
high-demand field.
Apply now for programs starting in September and you
could be eligible to receive up to $28,000 for education
and training support.

Our Resource and Information Centre is open Monday
and Wednesday 8:30am to 7pm; Tuesday, Thursday and
Friday 8:30am to 4:30pm; and Saturday 9am to 12pm
and is located on the ground floor at 43 Church Street
in St. Catharines.
Come visit us and access resources to conduct your
independent and self-directed job search including
computers with Internet connection, telephones,
photocopiers, fax machines, local newspapers and a
selection of job related books and brochures to help
with resume and cover letter writing. A free messaging
service is also available to those with no phone access.
