The speaker I chose is Beau
Lotto. The thesis of his speech
was that things are not always
what they seem. Not only
does he demonstrate this
through color, but also
through sound, and thus
reality.
Beau Lotto is a neuroscientist and owner of Lottolab.
He uses honeybees, colors, and optical illusions to help
understand the world.
These are a few of Beau Lotto’s most famous quotes:
“The best questions are the ones that create the most
uncertainty.”
“Play is one of the only human endeavors where
uncertainty is actually celebrated. Uncertainty is what
makes play fun.”
Look at the chart and say the color, not the word.

Your Right brain tries to say the color but your left brain insists on
reading the word
Lotto captured the audiences
attention in his introduction, by
showing an optical illusion. He
challenged the audience with a
question that seemed so simple but
unless, you looked deeply it was
difficult to answer correctly. He
started his speech by asking them if
they could tell which colors were the
same on the board on both the right
and left side. He engaged the
audience making his
introduction, fun and not boring.
Lotto maintains the engagement of the audience through keeping his slides
fun, but still informative. The way he presented his subject matter also helped
to maintain his audience, he did not just talk and talk about the technical
aspects of the brain, but he gave examples of it. Furthermore, he ended his
speech by leaving a thought/wonder in the audience’s mind.
In terms of dynamism I believe Lotto deserves a 5. His
speech was very energetic, exciting, interesting, and
informative. You could see that he really was
interested in his topic. Instead of having his nerves
bring down his speech, he used this to push his
presentation. He also had a variety of different visual
aids that helped to captivate the audience and make
his presentation fun. Most importantly he interacted
with the audience by asking them questions, and
having them answer with hand raises; this tactic was
very successful and also very smart.
I have learned many things from
Lotto’s presentation. I have
discovered the importance of
visual aids and how they can
help maintain your audience’s
attention and interest. How
these aids can help the audience
remember more. How
interaction between the
audience and the speaker will
help to calm a speaker
down, and help those
“butterflies” disappear. Most
importantly, I learned that just
shooting out information is not
too helpful to the audience.
Some tips used from Garr
Reynolds and Nancy Duarte,
that were used in Beau
Lotto’s presentation would
have to be there was humor
involved, imagery, and a ton
of visual aids that helped to
improve the presentation.
The main differences between
Sir Ken Robinson presentation
and Beau Lotto would have to be
the interaction between the
audience and the speaker. While
Robinson’s presentation was
informative he did not interact
with the audience like Lotto by
asking the audience questions
and having them answer them.
Also Beau Lotto’s speech
did not have such an urgent
message as Sir Ken
Robinson’s do. Lotto was
trying to teach the
perception of the brain.
Robinson’s speech had a
call to action.
Some tips I would
recommend for my
classmates would be to
include a lot of visual aids in
their presentations, interact
with the audience, make it
fun, and just practice your
speeches over and over.
