This document provides the design requirements for a prototype wooden beam project. The beam must support loads of 400lbs in the x-axis and 250lbs in the y-axis, weigh no more than 260g, and have deflections between 0.06-0.2 inches in the x-axis and 0.03-0.2 inches in the y-axis. It also cannot exceed $11 in cost. Research is presented on the use of prototypes, alternatives to physical prototypes, safety factors, and common load types for beam design.
