2. the qualities that make
a person, place, or
thing different from any
other
Editor's Notes
Before the presentation: Write a big 1 on the board. Ask: how much will I get if I add a 0 to this number? Ask: one more zero? (and go like this as much as you can ) Ask: can I add more zeros to this number? Ask: what happens if I erase number 1? (And do it) I have nothing right? You see 1 is everything, right? Let’s try to link this situation to our lives. Let’s say that the first zero is our education, (make them tell the other zeros according to the things that they like. For example, family, pets, friends, etc) Ask: what does 1 stand for without which all the things you have means nothing? (elicit the answers) They will most probably say: you, personality. Tell them that they are right and say it is your character. Give them an example: you might be a great doctor, or a businessman, you can be very rich and have everything you like but if you do not have character, all the other things will mean nothing. Put an emphasis on the importance of having character education in our schools.
What is character?
How can we be our best selves? This lesson is to teach you how to find your best selves by focusing on character traits and other people’s experiences.
Ask: who are you? If they say, I am a boy/girl, say I am not asking about your gender. I am white/black= I am not asking your race I am vietnamese/american = I am not asking your ethnicity Who are you as a person?
Explain: we are all the same as human beings, our character/personality makes us different.
Everyone is a world, and we take it with ourselves wherever we go.
EXPLAIN: imagine that you are an apple tree, there is an oak tree next to you. And you admire that oak tree a lot and you desire to be an oak tree. Can you be an oak tree? Is it possible? No, so what are you going to do? If you can’t change who you are, you should try to be the best apple tree.
