Introduction to Basketball
• Definition: Team sport where 2 teams of 5 players
aim to score by shooting into the opponent’s hoop
• Inventor: Dr. James Naismith (1891)
• Objective: Score more points than the opponent
Basic Rules
• 5 players per team on court
• Game starts with a jump ball
• Scoring: Field Goal (2 pts), 3-Pointer (3 pts), Free
Throw (1 pt)
Game Duration
• FIBA: 4 quarters x 10 min
• NBA: 4 quarters x 12 min
• Timeouts and substitutions during stoppages
Court Layout
• 28m x 15m (FIBA)
• Key Areas: Center Circle, Free Throw Line, Three-
Point Arc, Paint (Key Area)
Equipment
• Basketball: Size 7 (men), 6 (women), 5 (youth)
• Hoop height: 10 ft (3.05 m)
• Jerseys, shoes
Player Positions
• 1. Point Guard
• 2. Shooting Guard
• 3. Small Forward
• 4. Power Forward
• 5. Center
Substitutions
• Max team: 12 players (5 play, 7 subs)
• Sub only during stoppages
• Strategy: Rest, tactics, performance
Skill - Dribbling
• Purpose: Allows a player to move the ball without passing or violating the
rules.
• Types: Control dribble, Speed dribble, Crossover, Behind-the-back, Spin
dribble.
• Teaching Points:
• - Use finger pads, not palms.
• - Keep ball low and eyes up.
• - Athletic stance: knees bent, straight back.
• - Use both hands in practice.
• - Change speed and direction to avoid defenders.
Skill - Passing
• Purpose: Move the ball between teammates quickly and safely.
• Types: Chest, Bounce, Overhead, Baseball, Behind-the-back.
• Teaching Points:
• - Step toward target and follow through.
• - Firm grip and body alignment.
• - Communicate with teammates.
• - Practice under pressure.
Skill - Shooting
• Purpose: Main way to score points.
• Types: Set, Jump, Lay-up, Hook, Free throw.
• BEEF: Balance, Eyes, Elbow, Follow-through.
• Teaching Points:
• - Feet shoulder-width, knees bent.
• - Focus on rim, wrist snap finish.
• - Hand placement and repetition build consistency.
Skill - Rebounding
• Purpose: Gaining possession after a missed shot.
• Types: Offensive and Defensive.
• Teaching Points:
• - Box out early and jump explosively.
• - Hands ready and secure with two hands.
• - Read the ball's direction off the rim.
Skill - Defending
• Purpose: Prevent opponents from scoring.
• Types: On-ball, Help, Perimeter, Post.
• Teaching Points:
• - Stay in low stance, active hands.
• - Watch torso, not the ball.
• - Communicate, avoid fouls, and practice slides.
Offensive Strategies

Defensive Strategies

Fouls
• Personal: Hitting, pushing
