A total of 648,000 people are members at one of the 1,300 fitness clubs in Portugal,
which is synonymous with 6.24% of the total population and 7.31% of the population of at
least 15 years.
The average number of members per club was estimated at 498 at the end of 2014. This
relatively low number is explained by the fact that Portugal has a relatively large number
of small clubs, with 16.7% having a total space below 200 m² and 43.8% being between
200 and 500 m².
With an average monthly gross membership fee of EUR 36.70, Portugal ranks relatively
low in comparison to the other European markets. The market volume in terms of gross
membership revenues is estimated at EUR 289 million.
With regards to the organizational structure, 20.8% of the clubs are part of a chain and
only 5.2% operate within a franchise concept. The leading players in the Portuguese
market are Vivafit with 34 clubs, Holmes Place with 19 sites and Solinca with 12. The leading
companies combine for 104 clubs in total or 8% of the overall facilities but above 30% in
members’ market share.
The overall number of employees in Portugal is estimated at 8,400 employees in the
industry, based on an average of 6.5 employees per club in the survey sample.
Regarding future growth expectations, the Portuguese companies are fairly optimistic.
Thus, 64.3% expect their revenues to increase by at least 2.5% in 2015. For the year 2014,
only 39.7% of the Portuguese companies reported such an increase.
