The First Bank of the United States was the first national bank chartered by Congress in 1791 at the proposal of Alexander Hamilton. It was created to stabilize and improve national credit since only state-chartered banks existed previously. The Bank provided a safe system for financial transactions, stimulating the economy and enhancing the government's shaky credit by modeling the Bank of England.
