For the past 4 years Asnuntuck Community College students,
staff, faculty and community members have designated a
Saturday to give back to the local community. This year was no
different. Over 25 members of the Asnuntuck community
gathered on April 11th at 6 different drop off spots around the
area to collect baby items, such as diapers, wipes and baby
formula for needy families. The one-day event exceeded
expectations. The community came out in droves, even in the
midst of a rainstorm. The group collected over $1,600 in cash
donations and an estimated $5,000 in baby items in the towns
of Enfield, Stafford, East Windsor and Suffield. The donations
were passed along to com-munity organizations in each town
for those families in need. Volunteers commented on the outpouring of charity, “I am awed by the
people of Stafford,” said David Vania, Asnuntuck adjunct faculty member. A former student at
Asnuntuck who was out shopping at one of the stores, came up to a volunteer, saying “I am a former
ACC student, what can I do to help?” The event was spear-headed by Asnuntuck Career Services
Associate Director, Stacie Tweedie. Tweedie developed the idea of Community Action Day four years
ago after being approached by a community group. The popular event has featured a new com-munity
project each year and each year Tweedie is humbled by the response and generosity of her peers. “In
times like this it re-minds us that giving back is alive and well; thank you to the com-munity who took
precious dollars from their pockets and gave back. I can’t thank everyone enough for another beyond
fantastic Community Action Day,” says Tweedie.
The event was sponsored by the ACC Foundation.
Karen Dardinelli and Sherylle Hutchings
volunteered for community action at the
Stafford Highland Park drop off location.
