Wer hoch-skalierbare Anwendungen in Microsoft Azure bauen wollte, kam bislang an den Azure Cloud Services nicht vorbei. Doch diese Technologie hatte ihre Ecken und Kanten. Die an der BUILD 2015 veröffentlichte Azure Service Fabric Preview soll hierbei Abhilfe schaffen. Mit ihr sollen Entwickler schneller und unkomplizierter Anwendungen für die Cloud, wie auch fürs eigene Rechenzentrum, konstruieren können. Sascha Dittmann durfte bereits seit Ende letzen Jahres mit dem Dienst Erfahrungen sammeln und stellt diesen, anhand einiger Code-Beispiele, in dieser Session vor.

SQL Server vs. Azure DocumentDB – Ein Battle zwischen XML und JSON
Seit dem SQL Server 2000 hielt Stück für Stück die XML-Unterstützung Einzug in die Microsoft RDBMS Welt.
Mit der Azure DocumentDB kam die zweite, hauseigene NoSQL-Datenbank in der Microsoft Cloud hinzu, welche die Daten im JSON-Format verarbeitet.
In dieser Session werden wir anhand eines Praxisbeispiels step-by-step, d.h. von den vorbereitenden Schritten, über das Schreiben bis hin zum Lesen der Daten, diese beiden Technologien gegenüberstellen.
Dabei arbeiten wir die Vor- und Nachteile der einzelnen Ansätze heraus und zeigen Best Practices auf.

Das Programmiermodel MapReduce, welches vor einigen Jahren von Google veröffentlicht wurde, hat Einzug in zahlreiche Systeme erhalten. Dabei wurde es sowohl als eigenständiges System, wie beispielweise bei Hadoop, Disco oder Amazon Elastic MapReduce, aber auch als Abfragesprache innerhalb größerer Systeme, wie beispielweise bei MongoDB, Greenplum DB oder Aster Data, implementiert. Diese Session stellt gängige Problemstellungen aus der Praxis vor und wie diese mit dem MapReduce Framework von Microsoft HDInsight umgesetzt werden können.
Hadoop 2.0 - The Next Level
In 2010 stellten die Entwickler von Hadoop fest, dass bei sehr große Clustern (4.000 Knoten und mehr) das bisherige MapReduce Framework nicht mehr richtig skaliert.
Deshalb wurde dieses komplett überarbeitet.
Das Ergebnis war YARN (Yet Another Resource Negotiator).
Neben einer besseren Skalierbarkeit erzeugte YARN weitere positive Nebeneffekte.
Im Oktober 2013 wurde YARN mit dem Hadoop 2.0 Release veröffentlicht.

In der Hadoop-Welt wird der SQL-Zugriff über die Komponente Hive ermöglicht.
Über den Microsoft Hive ODBC-Konnektor können die üblichen BI-Tools, wie PowerPivot, diesen Zugriff direkt nutzen.
Die PolyBase-Engine schließlich wird ein Bestandteil des SQL Server 2012 Parallel Data Warehouse werden und erlaubt einem transparenten SQL-Zugriff, egal, wo sich die Daten befinden.

Wir leben in einem Datenzeitalter! Nach Schätzungen in 2006, betrug das weltweite "Datenuniversum" ca. 0.18 Zettabytes (1 ZB => 10 hoch 21 Bytes bzw. 1 Mrd. Terabytes). In 2011 hatte sich dieses Volumen sogar verzehnfacht (1,8 Zettabytes). Somit wird in vielen Anwendungsszenarien das Thema Big Data und Big Processing immer wichtiger.
Klassische relationale Datenbanksysteme, sowie Statistik und Visualisierungstools, sind oft nicht in der Lage, derart große Datenmengen zu verarbeiten. Für Big Data kommt daher eine neue Art von Software zum Einsatz, die massiv parallel auf bis zu hunderten oder tausenden von Prozessoren bzw. Servern arbeitet.

Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity server
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).
zkStudyClub - LatticeFold: A Lattice-based Folding Scheme and its Application...
Folding is a recent technique for building efficient recursive SNARKs. Several elegant folding protocols have been proposed, such as Nova, Supernova, Hypernova, Protostar, and others. However, all of them rely on an additively homomorphic commitment scheme based on discrete log, and are therefore not post-quantum secure. In this work we present LatticeFold, the first lattice-based folding protocol based on the Module SIS problem. This folding protocol naturally leads to an efficient recursive lattice-based SNARK and an efficient PCD scheme. LatticeFold supports folding low-degree relations, such as R1CS, as well as high-degree relations, such as CCS. The key challenge is to construct a secure folding protocol that works with the Ajtai commitment scheme. The difficulty, is ensuring that extracted witnesses are low norm through many rounds of folding. We present a novel technique using the sumcheck protocol to ensure that extracted witnesses are always low norm no matter how many rounds of folding are used. Our evaluation of the final proof system suggests that it is as performant as Hypernova, while providing post-quantum security.

Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance.
