• Renzulli (1978) tehetségmodellje
• Mönks és Knoers (1997) tehetségmodellje
• Az élsport igényli a tudományos alapokon nyugvó
kiválasztási rendszerek (Révész, Bicsérdy, Bognár,
Géczi; 2006)
• A sportágak erősen specializálódtak, ezért
sportágszempontú tehetség meghatározást és
tehetséggondozási programot kívánnak (Révész,
Géczi, Bognár, Bicsérdy; 2005).
• Nézőpontok a sportban:
– edzés, Ericsson (1993) Tudatos Felkészülés Elmélete
– környezet, Baker és Horton (2004)
4. Szakirodalmi Áttekintés
Tudatos Felkészülés Elmélete (Ericsson, 1993.)
• A kiemelkedő teljesítmény elérésében az
edzésnek és a felkészülésnek van a
legmeghatározóbb szerepe (Ericsson et al., 1994).
• Az edzésnek sokkal jelentősebb értéket
tulajdonítanak, mint a velünk született
tényezőknek.
• Nagy mennyiségű, minőségi, tudatos gyakorlás.
• 10.000 óra avagy 10 év, mint küszöbérték.
• Az elméletet igazolták: tenisz (Monsaas, 1985);
középtávfutás (Wallingford, 1975); birkózás (Hodges
és Starkes, 1996); labdarúgás (Helsen et al., 1998);
jégtánc (Starkes et al., 1996); és karate (Hodge és
Deakin, 1998) sportágakban.
5. Szakirodalmi Áttekintés
• Baker és Horton (2004) csapatsportok vizsgálatakor
arra jutott, hogy a kiemelkedő teljesítményű versenyzők
több időt töltöttek csapatedzéssel, edző- sportoló
találkozóval és videó elemzéssel, mint kevésbé sikeres
társaik.
• Csapatsportokban (Helsen et al., 1998), jégkorongban
(Soberlack és Côté, 2003) és hosszútávú triatlonban
(Baker et al., 2005) a sportolók korábban elérték a
7. Módszerek

14. Összefoglalás
(interjú)
A megkérdezettek véleménye alapján a
kiemelkedő teljesítmény több tényezőtől függ:
– Az edzés fontos része a felkészülésnek,
azonban nincs kizárólagos szerepe
– Pszichomotoros tényezők, mentális és
pszichés tényezők, valamint a környezeti
hatások szerepe is fontos tényező a
felkészülésben.
– Az edző személyisége, szaktudása,
felkészültsége meghatározza a teljesítményt
15. Konklúzió
• Eredményeink alapján megerősíthetjük Ericsson
elméletét.
• A sportolók véleménye alapján elmondható, hogy:
– a jó kondícionális,
– motiváció,
– a pszichés képességek,
– az edzés körülményei,
– a család támogatása,
– a jó edző- sportoló kapcsolat
szintén fontosak a kiemelkedő teljesítményben
• Eredményeink alapján a Tudatos Felkészülés Elméletét
önmagában nem támogatjuk mivel, a környezeti hatások
fontos szerepet játszanak a teljesítményben.
Dear Chairman! Ladies and Gentlemen! First of all I would like to thank for the opportunity to present our study here. In this presentation we would like to talk about some interesting characteristics of an individual competitive sport. It is well known that there are many factors influencing peak performance but we still don’t exactly know which of them have the most important role in achievement. The opinion of sport scientists differ whether the innate abilities or the nurturing is more relevant. In this study we also try to find an answer for this question through swimming. The title of our presentation: Swimming and the Theory of Deliberate Practice
The reason for choosing swimming for our investigation is that this is one of the most successful sports in Hungary. Our sportsmen have great successes at international level. What we can see on this slide. Before we present our results, we would like to demonstrate a short literature review, as it gives a lot of interesting theories in the topic.
Literarature review Sport researchers have been interested in identifying the factors that distinguish the exceptional from the ordinary sport performer. We have seen a number of attempts to explain the development of sport expertise and success. Talent identification and development researches focus on clarifying the means and possibilities to maximize one’s ability to perform at a peak level. Talent models play a principal component of talent identification researches. The talent model of Renzulli shows three consisting factors: creativity, motivation and high ability, but environmental factors were not mentioned as influencing. Mönks and Knoers developed a model with three environmental factors, which has influence on raising a talent: family, school, peers. Based on a large quantity of talent research we can say there are 2 main points of view in sport which are opposite each other. These are the practice and environment.
Ericsson and colleagues based on the results of 80’s researches found that the most important factor of achievement is practice. They extended Simon and Chase’s theory of “10 year rule” and established the theory of deliberate practice, which means that almost everyone can reach a high level performance after 10 years of practice. In their opinion practice is the most important factor in peak performance. The theory of deliberate practice was observed by many authors in many domains. It was investigated in science, art, music and sport, for example distance running, figure skating, wrestling, karate, field hockey, soccer, basketball, netball, ice-hockey, in comparative form in swimming and triathlon, ultra-endurance triathlon and it has been supported in tennis, distance running, wrestling, soccer, figure skating and karate.
Contary based upon Baker and Horton’s examination there seem to be an apparent distinction between primary and secondary factors that influence sport expertise. In their work, genetic, training, and psychological factors as primary factors were identified as directly influence sport expertise. Secondary factors are coach, training possibilities and equipments. In some investigations the authors found that the athletes reached the peak performance earlier than 10 years. Based upon the opinion of coaches we found that the practice is important factor in performance however it doesn’t play exclusively role in peak performance.
The purpose of this study was to find out if deliberate practice is the most influencing in peak performance or not, based upon the opinion of Hungarian swimmers.
Methods 7 formerly highly successful swimmers, members of Hungarian National Team were participating in the study. All the athletes won medals in Olympic and/or World and European Championships. All the swimmers reached their successes under the direction of the well-known coach, Tamás Széchy. Széchy was the most successful coach in Hungary, his swimmers won 8 Olympic gold medals and 12 gold medals in World Championships. Our research consisted of 2 main parts. In quantitative part we investigated the swimmer’s biographic data with questionnaires. In qualitative part athletes were interviewed to understand their concepts and beliefs about deliberate practice. The basic statistical analyses were made with SPSS 14.0
In the questionnaire we asked the swimmers in which age they were firstly taken to the swimming pool, when they started to swim. The figure shows, that the age of starting swimming was 5 to 9. The mean is around 7 years. It seemed to be interesting to know when they firstly participated in a swimming competition. All the swimmers were pursuing competititive sport till their age of 10. These events were in Hungary and swimmers participated in age group competitions.
We were also interested in how old they were when they started to train with the great coach, Tamás Széchy. Here we can find a bigger range of age, from 8 (eight) to 15 (fifteen). We got these wide range results because not the all swimmers started to swimm with Széchy. Some of them started swimming in other club and later jointed to Széchy, but these swimmers were selected by Széchy because he always looked for talented young swimmers and chose the bests. The swimmers won the first medal in National Championships in their age group between the age of 10 and 14 (fourteen). The swimmers reached the Hungarian success after 5 years swimming.
The participants won their first medal in international championships in their age group at the age of 14 (fourteen) -16 (sixteen). It means that the first international good result was reached around 7 years swimming. As in this sport based on the rules younger swimmers can participate in competitions of adults as well. We asked at which age they could reach successes in higher age group. In international competitions at the age of 15 (fifteen)-18 (eighteen) they were already successful. For that reason swimmers reached the international level less than 10 years practice, because the average time of practice is 9,29 which consists of the teaching process as well.
Altogether they spent around 12 (twelve) years in the National Team of Hungary and more than 17 (seventeen) years in the sport of swimming.
After the questionnaires all of them were interviewed, which results can be seen on the slide. On the basis of swimmers answers the influencing factors of peak performance can be divided into two main parts: natural influences and environmental influences. The psychomotor, mental and psychological factors categorised as natural influences. These are partly genetically determined, partly developed by the environment. Within environmental factors swimmers mentioned training, coach’s knowledge and family support which influencing the outcome. It seems that individual’s genes have less influence on peak performance and the influence of environment is higher.
Summarizing the results we can say that the swimmers started to swim at the average age of 7.28. At the average age of 12,28 they won their first medal in national competition. It was after 4 years swimming. At the average age of 15,14 they won the first medal in international competition in their age group after less than 8 years practice, while at the average age of 16,57 they reached international successes in the highest age category. Altogether they need 9,29 years in average to reach peak performance.
Based on the opinion of the Hungarian swimmers the success depends on several factors. Training is not the only important factor. In their opinion for deliberate practice other factors in the background, like psychomotor factors, mental and psychological factors and environmental factors are necessary as well
We can finally say, that based on the biography data of swimmers the theory of deliberate parctice can be supported. But in the opinion of swimmers they would not be able to reach peak performance only with training. In their opinion they needed to have high level physical abilities, motivation, mental abilities, good training possibilities, family support and a good relationship with their coach. While formerly training thought to be the most important in peak performance, this study, beside others, proves that the psychological and social background are extremely important factors in the process.
