Ayrton Senna was a Brazilian Formula 1 racing driver. He won his first Formula 1 race in his debut season in 1984 driving for Lotus. Senna tragically died from injuries sustained in an accident at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix. His death was considered a national tragedy in Brazil, where the government declared three days of mourning. 3.  Senna was partnered in
his first year at LotusRenault by Italian
driver Elio de Angelis.
At the second round of
the season, the
Portuguese Grand Prix,
Senna took the first pole
position of his Formula
1 career. He converted it
into his first victory in
the race, which was held
in very wet conditions,
winning by over a
minute from Michele
Alboreto.

4.  Senna's final race
the San
Marino Grand Prix, was held
on the "Autodromo Enzo e
Dino Ferrari" circuit located in
Imola, Italy in 1994.
As Senna entered the highspeed Tamburello the car left
the track hitting the concrete
retaining wall.
His brainstem was inactive and
that he would not survive.

5.  Senna's death was considered by
many of his Brazilian fans to be
a national tragedy, and the
Brazilian government declared
three days of national mourning.
The Italian Air Force
offered to fly the coffin
back to Brazil, but the Senna
family wished that it return
home in a Brazilian plane.
