Bocce challenge nets
$1000 for charity;
braggin’ rights for Axis
Webcor builders are
hard at work on several
downtown Condo
developments, including
Axis and The 88.
Construction teams
on each project are in a
race to see which building
will get its occupancy permit
first. While that remains uncertain, the
teams decided to take their friendly rivalry
to the court. The game was bocce and the
setting was a balmy Friday afternoon in
the urban oasis next to The Montgomery
Hotel and Paragon Restaurant, the site of
downtown San Jose’s only bocce court.
Luckily for Axis, developer Mark Tersini
of KT Properties is an experienced bocce
player. Tersini, along with Erinne Keffer
and Eric Casey of the Axis sales staff
and Tolga Acar of Webcor represented
Webcor’s Axis team which beat Webcor’s
team from The 88.
Best of all, the teams donated
$1000 to Family Supportive
Housing Inc. to help fund a
new homeless shelter at King
and Dobbin streets.
Not far from the front doors of Axis, emerging from an
underpass below the Guadalupe Freeway, stands a red,
two-story clapboard building steeped in the history of San
Jose — including tales of immigrants, civic wheeler-dealers
and long-time locals. Tucked away at 301 West Saint John
St. this nearly century-old landmark is topped by a classic
neon sign for Henry’s Hi-Life, certain to beckon future residents
of Axis looking for a unique neighborhood dining spot.
Built at the turn of the century as
the Torino Hotel, the structure
was a resting point for many
Italian immigrants that came in
the late 1800’s to work in the
farms and orchards of the Santa
Clara Valley. Later on, the place
adopted a more colorful character,
earning a reputation as a “house
of ill repute” with its saloon-like
common room in the front,
parlors, and rooms upstairs that
more likely rented by
the hour than the night.
Then in 1960, the building took on a
fresh, new life. Henry Pickett and his
wife Doris established Henry’s Hi-Life; a
restaurant that soon became a stomping
ground for locals who wanted a meal,
a drink, or to share some downtown
gossip in a familiar setting. Henry passed
away in 1986, but his wife and the Henry’s
Hi-Life crew have continued his legacy, dishing
up the finest steaks, chicken and pork chops to San Jose
citizens, including neighborhood regulars, Sharks players,
city leaders and soon, the new residents of Axis.
“Today, we serve people from all walks of life and think
the new downtown residents at Axis will find it a welcome
spot,” said Richard Aranda, manager of Henry’s Hi-Life.
“During lunch hours, it’s common to see well-dressed
professionals at one table for a business meeting and a
group of construction workers eating at another. After 5
p.m., we get a crowd that enjoys a drink after a long day
of work.”
With a prime location behind HP Pavilion, next to Guadalupe
River Park and blocks away from the downtown core,
Henry’s is often buzzing, especially when the Sharks are
in town. During football season, fans arrive at 8:30 a.m.
to fill up on steak ‘n’ eggs and other hearty breakfasts,
and then settle in to watch the
49ers or Raiders on the big
screens with their buddies.
With a fully-stocked bar offering
15 beers on tap, it is important
to have a bartender that knows
his craft and his clientele well.
Henry’s Hi-Life has “Jimmy the
Bartender” Dillsaver, a fixture
behind the bar for more than
two decades. A native Californian
with a classic Irish glint in his eye,
Jimmy is beloved by the regulars
and a great source of community knowledge.
When it comes to the food, “if you’re a barbecue fan,
you’re going to love the place,” according to Jeanne
Anderson of KT Properties, who lunches there often.
“I usually go for the barbecued chicken or the boneless
teriyaki chicken breast, but you can’t go wrong with any
selection,” said Anderson, “The baby back and spare ribs
are very popular. For maximum beef, go for the 24-ounce
porterhouse or, for a lighter choice, there’s the 12-ounce
USDA-choice New York steak. It’s all good.”
For incoming Axis residents looking for a hearty breakfast
before watching NFL games, a delicious barbecue lunch or
dinner, or just a drink, a yarn or common sense advice from
Jimmy at the bar, Henry’s Hi-Life is a charming neighborhood
haunt that goes a long way to capture the spirit of old-time
San Jose amidst the modern downtown cityscape.

Axis joins acclaimed structures
constructed by Webcor
Axis is a rising icon on the San Jose skyline, in a big part due to the
efforts of the construction team from Webcor. In fact, from the California
Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park to The Ritz-Carlton Hotel and
Residences at LA Live, Webcor has built many of California’s premier
landmark buildings during its more than 35-year history. Its portfolio
includes other signature condos as well, such as The Millennium,
Soma Grand and Heritage on Fillmore in San Francisco, and
The 88 in San Jose.
Webcor is well-known for being a hands-on builder that has developed
valuable expertise in a wide range of product types, including high-tech
corporate campuses, commercial office buildings, high-density residential
projects, luxury hotels, parking structures, health care and biotech facilities,
renovations, historic restoration and seismic upgrade, and interior construction.
Consistently ranked by volume as the largest general contractor in
California, Webcor is also a recognized leader in sustainable “green”
building, with more than 14 million square feet of projects completed
or in-progress under the USGBC’s LEED rating system.
“Axis is an example of what a committed owner can achieve by hiring
an industry leading architect and structural engineer for design and
California’s premier builder (Webcor) to execute the construction,”
said Pat Reidy, Webcor’s construction manager.

At Our Doorstep
For a few hours on March 15, Axis literally went to
the dogs as a Saturday morning gathering introduced
lovable pets and their owners to the neighborhood and
showcased the possibilities of high-rise urban living.
Dozens of dogs and their owners braved wind, rain and
cold to take a tour of the Axis
model homes, pick up an Axis
flying disk and explore the
neighborhood.
South Bay Purebred Rescue and
Bay Area Pet Patrol were on hand
to talk about pet adoption and
doggie day care, respectively.
Meanwhile, a bulldog named
“Lucy” won the inaugural
“Downtown Doggie” contest,
taking home fabulous prizes
from Andy’s Pet Shop, located
nearby along The Alameda.
Stay tuned for “Pet Axis
Weekend” this summer,
with two days of complimentary pampering for dogs,
further highlighting the pet-friendly nature of Axis.
Top 10 Tips for Urban Pet Owners
An estimated one-third of all high-rise
condominium dwellers have pets. With
the increasing trend toward high-rise
urban living, choosing the right pet
for your home, or the right home for
your pet, offers new challenges. In
conjunction with Axis, Humane Society
Silicon Valley developed the following
Top 10 Tips for Urban Pet Owners:
1 Pick the right companion for your
lifestyle work schedule: If you’re one
of the many who work long hours or travel
a lot, avoid a high-energy dog that needs
several hours of exercise each day.
2 Choose the right breed for your
home. Examples of dog breeds you should
avoid adopting if you live in a condo or
apartment without a yard: large sporting
breeds (Vizsla, Pointer, Labrador Retriever),
giant breeds (Great Dane, St. Bernard) and
young large breeds (German Shepherd)
that need more exercise.
3 If you’re shopping around for a
new place to live, pay attention to
pet-friendly amenities: Look for dog
parks, pet-friendly cafes, vet offices,
groomers, doggie daycare and pet stores
nearby. Make sure there are a variety of
places you can go and enjoy together.
4 Get involved locally: Think about
joining a dog group to keep your pooch
healthy, happy and socialized (e.g.
societydog.com). Find out what the two
of you like to do best together…and then
sign up for a class together to learn
something new and meet new friends,
both canine and human!
5 Be a considerate neighbor, and
build community: Start talking to your
closest neighbors, as they can become
great resources for you. Offer to check in
on their pets while they’re gone, if they
can do the same for you. Or offer to walk
their dog with yours (if they get along), if
they can return the favor.
6 Train your pet to show proper
etiquette. Make the effort to have your
companion know how to greet new
people and behave in public, especially
if you’re using an elevator often. No one
likes a dog that lunges, barks, or jumps
on them.
7 Keep your pet active and healthy:
Try to spend at least 30-60 minutes in
physical activity twice a day. Physical
exercise and the opportunity to socialize
and play are all necessary daily requirements
for any animal companion to stay well.
8 Be sure to understand the signs of
boredom or anxiety: If your pet becomes
destructive, or has “accidents”, these
could be the early signs of separation
anxiety. To help them be alone, provide
games, stimulation and appropriate toys to
chew. Hide treats throughout the house
before leaving and let them find them.
Leaving a TV or radio on can even help
reduce low levels of anxiety when tuned to
classical music. Consider hiring a dog walker
or sitter to come in and play and provide a
bathroom break, or bringing your pet to
doggie daycare.
9 Purchase appropriate equipment for
your living area: Cat trees don’t take up
a lot of floor space and are a great way to
make sure your cat is exercised and enter-
tained. Cat boxes have many options these
days where they are easily camouflaged.
Dog and cat beds help keep fur off your
furniture. Creative and functional new
items for urban pet owners are being
offered all the time!
 Friends are for life: Our companions
are social beings who need like-minded
friends for support and learning. Everyone
needs a true friend to laugh with, play
with and just give you a hug when you
need it most…and our pets need it too!
Let go of your cares and have fun!

trees lining Almaden Blvd. Currently,
trees and landscaping are being
planted in the pool area. Meanwhile,
a poolside event is being
