Edutopia Webinar: Social and Emotional Learning: Making a Case in an NCLB WorldEdutopia
Reading, writing, and arithmetic are important -- there's no doubt of that. But it takes more than those basic academic skills for students to grow into happy, successful adults.
As educators know well, children also need to learn self-esteem, self-discipline, and strong communication skills in order to succeed in school and life. But it's easy for those essential lessons to get lost in the race to raise standardized test scores.
In this session, two pioneering educators and a national education leader explain why social and emotional skills deserve time and attention -- SEL has been shown to raise test scores -- and how they provide it effectively in their schools.
Host: Grace Rubenstein, senior producer, Edutopia
Presenters: Tim Shriver, Chairman of the CASEL Board of Directors, Sheldon Berman, superintendent, Jefferson County Public Schools, Louisville, Kentucky, and Kati Delahanty, English teacher, Charlestown High School, Boston

2. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. is an organization of college educated women committed to
the constructive development of its members and public service with a primary focus on
the African-American Community. We are a Sisterhood Called to serve. Our public motto
is: Intelligence is the Torch of Wisdom.
On January 13, 1913 on the campus of Howard University twenty-two young, scholarly, and
ambitious black women founded what has today become the largest Black Greek Letter
Organization for African American women. These young women wanted to use their
collective strength to promote academic excellence and to provide assistance to persons
in need. Our founders were interested in establishing an organization committed to the
promotion of high cultural, intellectual, and moral standards among its members for its
own benefits as well as for that of the larger society in which it existed.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is dedicated to the ideals of Sisterhood, Scholarship and Public
Service. In accordance with these ideals, Delta has established a long and glorious history
of educational, cultural, political, and social service in the public's interest. To further its
public service goals, Delta Sigma Theta operates under a Five Point Program Thrust:
Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and
Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, Political Awareness and Involvement.
3.
4. Brief History of Fraternity:
Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. was founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C., January 9, 1914, by three young
African-American male students who wanted to organize a Greek letter fraternity that would truly exemplify the ideals of
brotherhood, scholarship, and service.
The founders deeply wished to create an organization that viewed itself as "a part of" the general community rather than
"apart from" the general community. They believed that each potential member should be judged by his own merits rather
than his family background or affluence ...without regard of race, nationality, skin tone or texture of hair. They wished and
wanted their fraternity to exist as part of even a greater brotherhood which would be devoted to the "inclusive we" rather
than the "exclusive we".
From its inception, the Founders also conceived Phi Beta Sigma as a mechanism to deliver services to the general
community. Rather than gaining skills to be utilized exclusively for themselves and their immediate families, the founders of
Phi Beta Sigma held a deep conviction that they should return their newly acquired skills to the communities from which
they had come. This deep conviction was mirrored in the Fraternity's motto, "Culture For Service and Service For
Humanity". Today the Fraternity is 98 years old, and has a collective membership of over 150,000 brothers worldwide, from
the likes of Jerry Rice, Karl Malone, Scottie Pippen, John Lewis, Terrence Howard, James Weldon Johnson, George
Washington Carver, Huey P. Newton, Emmitt Smith, Bill Clinton, Hines Ward, Georg Iggers, and many many more.
