1. A Walk through Isaiah
Warnings and Promise for the Future
2. Isaiah
• Prophet in the Southern Kingdom of Judah
• Called to serve during the times of Uzziah through to Hezekiah
• Was active during the times before Babylon took the Northern
Kingdom of Israel into captivity. Approximately Jeroboam II though
Hosea.
• As a Prophet and mouthpiece for and of God, his messages were
meant to remind the people of the covenant, to call out their sin, to
correct their ways, to warn of the consequences of disobedience,
and to give hope of God’s promised and planned future for those
who agree to follow.
3. A Major Prophet
• His message was not limited in time frame or scope
• He prophesied about things contemporary to the times he lived
and projected out far into the future, even the End of Times!
• He was not limited to the region of Israel. His message is one that
references nations in Israel and Judah’s day and is message to all
nations world-wide in regards to God’s ultimate intensions and
will.
• He will have one of the clearest GOSPEL messages point us to
Christ the Messiah!
4. How to better understand prophesy statements as far as TIME and Fulfillment
Near Fulfillment - within next 100 – 200 years
Distant Fulfillment - within next 600 –years
End time Fulfillment - 2000 years (Millennial or Eternity Future)
Key: Don’t jump to conclusion as you read
Just keep in mind that one of the above is the likely reference (think Time
Frame)
Wait for key phases or specific descriptors to help you clue in to the time.
Look for things that fit into the timeframe (things already known)
(example – if a verse mentions “ALL NATIONS” Coming to the Lord, this will
RULE OUT a
Near fulfillment. Or if it says, ‘the messiah will be stricken’ this would rule out the
Millennial/Eternity future timeframe.)
Lastly, consider dual prophesies. These may have both a near and Distant or End
Time fulfillment in one sentence.
5. Example of Duel Prophesy Fulfillment
Isaiah 61:1-3
1The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings
unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives,
and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;
2To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort
all that mourn;
3To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of
joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be
called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified
This is likely the clearest sample in the Bible to show and explain Duel Fulfillment. In one passage and
in one voice, we see the authors word being read by Christ. Jesus interprets the meaning of the passage
by stopping at the place where it IS FULFILLED, but not going on to read the message IS NOT YET
FULFILLED. Let ‘s see this in action.
6. Luke 4:16-22
16And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into
the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up for to read. 17And there was delivered unto him
the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it
was written,
18The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the
poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and
recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
19To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. 20And he closed the book, and he gave it again to
the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on
him. 21And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears. 22And all
bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And
they said, Is not this Joseph's son?
Key to interpretation: Events!! Not Dates.
Look for EVENTS not Dates (in Most cases)
7. Another Example
Luke 7:18-23
18Then the disciples of John reported to him concerning all these things. 19And John, calling two
of his disciples to him, sent them to Jesus, saying, “Are You the Coming One, or do we look for
another?”
20When the men had come to Him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to You, saying, ‘Are
You the Coming One, or do we look for another?’ ” 21And that very hour He cured many
of infirmities, afflictions, and evil spirits; and to many blind He gave sight.
22Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things you have seen and
heard: that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are
raised, the poor have the gospel preached to them.23And blessed is he who is not offended
because of Me.”
Here, Jesus’ cousin, John the Baptist and Prophet, the one called to ’prepare the way’ for Jesus arrival.
The one who baptized Jesus, still has a trace of doubt. He sends his disciples to ask Jesus for
conformation - ‘are you the FULFILLMENT?’. Jesus does not answer by Yes or No. He does not answer by
providing a DATE of the fulfillment. He performed ACTIONS. These actions became EVENTS. He then
tells John’s Disciples to go back to tell John “What they had seen and heard”. This was the PROOF of
Fulfilled Prophesy.
8. Thematic Divisions
Written in 2 major thematic sections: First Half of Warnings and Second Half of Hope
The fall of Judah and Exile into Babylon marks the space between the two halves
The first half is directly aim at the Jewish people, both in the north and south.
The second half, post EXILE, is also directed to the descendant’s of Abraham, Isaac, and
Jacob but also is clearly meant to communicate to ALL NATIONS, potential ‘spiritual’
descendant’s of Abraham
The first half is noted from Chapter 1 through Chapter 39
The Second half is noted from Chapter 40 through 66
More narrow themes and messages divide each section into smaller sections.
We will explore them as we navigate this great book.
9. God’s message and vision to Isaiah
God speaks with Creation as his witness and audience
He tells creation, the heavens and earth, to listen to his assessment and evaluation of
the people of Judah and Jerusalem.
Bottom line is they are Blind and Backslidden
He compares them to domesticated animals – Ox and Ass
Judah is worst than both. For the Ox knows his owner/master. The Ass knows that he
lives in his master’s home.
The accusation is that Judah does NOT! They don’t acknowledge that God is their
Lord and that they reside in the Promised Land of HIS PROVISION.
God has brought them up, guided them, and nourished them. Yet, they do not even
act as if he exist. They do not even CONSIDER GOD in all that they do.
10. God concludes that Judah is a SINFUL nation
A people laden with sin and evil doers. Children of corruption.
They have forsaken the Lord and provoked him to Anger.
Question to Judah. Why should I even bother punishing you anymore?
You are too far gone. All you will continue to do is – Rebel and rebel again.
You are FULL of SICKNESS. You are PUTRIFIED with sickness.
Why have they not been ANNIHALATED and totally ABANDONED already?
Why have they not yet been treated like Sodom and Gomorrah?
A very small Remnant!!
11. Speaking to Judah, He now fully equates them to Sodom and Gomorrah
As Sodom and Gomorrah, you leaders of Judah HEAR THE WORD OF THE LORD!
You do not honor me when you come to sacrifice bulls and goats and burn incense.*
You are merely going through the motions and your works are in VAIN!*
Your NEW MOONS and APPOINTED FEAST – MY SOUL HATES.*
What is note worthy about the points made above? *
When you offer praise, I will NOT hear. Why?
What is the ANSWER?
12. Thoroughly Corrupt
To be corrupted, rightness and or purity had to have previously been present.
Judah determined to have been corrupted.
Zion is accused of being a HARLOT. What does this mean?
Verse 23 says what about the leaders? Hint – Lesson Learned in the Prior Study Rewind and Review
God’s Solutions? What is his promise?
That in which the Rebellious trusted and desired, shall leave them desolate and destroyed by fire.
They will have NO rest or Relief. Unquenchable
13. The Proud will FALL! Chapter 2
A END TIME message to the World
The Mountain of the Lord will be Established in Jerusalem
ALL Nations will seek him there. All will flow into this great city.
They will acknowledge Israel and her God!
The World will desire to be taught by the God of Israel.
God will Judge ALL NATIONS.
Under HIM, Will they ‘Beat their swords into plowshares’.
They shall NOT LEARN WAR ANYMORE!
United Nations has borrowed from this and is their ‘reported’ stated goal.
Question – Why is this Vain?
14. The state of man-kind is LOFTY, Haughty, and PROUD!
Why has JACOB been Forsaken of God?
They have trusted in wealth.
They have trusted in Man and Nations.
They have trusted in idols.
God will bring them to account.
Therefore, they will be Judged.
The PROUD will be Humbled.
Their Idols will be abolished.
They will flee and hide themselves from the Lord
15. You are accountable to the Lord
The Lord is who will hold them accountable
He will take away the safety and security from Judah and Jerusalem
No one is immune , none protected, none will go untouched
It will effect all classes, walks of life, and ages.
The youth will no longer respect/honor the elder.
All will be in despair. The guilt is on their faces.
Sowing and Reaping
Pride is again identified as the great cause. The heart of the problem.
Chapter 3
16. Chapter 4
More Women than Men, leaving the women desperate for male counterparts
THE BRANCH shall be bright in Zion
V 3
’he that is left in Zion’ shall be called “holy”.
“when the Lord shall wash away the filth from the daughters of Zion”
God will create upon every dwelling place; cloud, fire, and tabernacle of refuse.
Pride in material wealth
It will all fall apart. Will be left desolate.
17. Interpretation of Chapters 3 and 4
As best that I can see given how the EVENTS and DESCRIPTIONS of Life for the people of Judah
These are likely a combination of Near and Distant Fulfilment. Chapter 3 likely includes the short
immediate time period of the last 4 kings before Babylon took them. Yet, it is not limited to this.
We have to consider the timeframe of life in Israel after the Crucifixion of Christ. This was an extremely
dangerous time for Jewish people. Oppression and persecution was great. Famine was high and the MEN
were dying at a rate that could lead to the statement, ‘Seven woman for one man’. As many men would
die in battle. This would leave leadership to the woman and children. Hard to nail down for sure. Can we
consider modern times as well as features of the TIME OF JACOB’s TROUBLE?
Chapter 4 turns positive. The branch of the LORD is there. Also, ‘those left in Zion shall be Holy’.
The Lord will wash away the FILTH from the Daughters of Zion. The Lord will create upon every dwelling
place a cloud and smoke by day and shining flame by night. This is consistent with End Time language. I
favor Millennial, but could be Eternity.
18. Does the Prophet report what he sees in one point in time or does he see and report on many
different times in one voice? As we saw in the Isaiah 61 passage, it can be the later.
Let’s breakdown Chapter 3 ands 4 and see what we can learn based on the EVENTS as given
To do so, we will look at the passage as described and attempt to determine WHEN in the HISTORY
of Israel the events COULD have or MOST LIKELY could have occurred based on what we know about
her history.
Here the the timeframes to consider; Last 4 Kings before the Exile to Babylon (Pre-Exile), Babylon
through Persia (B/P), Greek rule, Roman rule, Modern (now), Tribulation, Millennium, Eternity
Future.
