Quito is the capital city of Ecuador, located 16 miles south of the equator, with a population of over 2 million according to the 2010 census. The historic center of Quito, one of the largest and best preserved in the Americas, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978 and features a central square marking the location of the equator. Quito has grown significantly from around 10,000 inhabitants in 1809 to over 2 million today.

• Quito is the capital of Ecuador in South America.
• The population according to the 2010 census was
2,239,191.
• The historic center of Quito has one of the largest, least-
altered and best-preserved historic centers in the
Americas that we can see in one of the photos.
• Quito was the first World Cultural Heritage Site declared
by UNESCO in 1978.
• In the old photo we can see the central square of Quito
that is located about 25 kilometers (16 mi) south of the
equator. A monument and museum mark this location.
• In 1809 Quito was a city of about 10,000 inhabitants. We
can appreciate the size of the city in the 1866 map.
