Avelar Brotero was a Portuguese botanist and professor who served as the director of the Botanical Garden in Coimbra. He authored two influential books, Flora Lusitanica and Phytographia Lusitaniae Selectior, which were the first in-depth descriptions of native plants in Portugal. A high school and the Broteriana Society were later named in his honor.
