Autodidacticism is self-education or self-directed learning where a person educates themselves without a formal teacher or school setting. An autodidact is a self-taught person who learns on their own through means such as libraries, websites, friends, or family members. Many famous historical figures such as Socrates, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Edison were autodidacts who excelled in subjects outside of conventional education through self-teaching. Inquiry into autodidacticism has implications for learning theory, educational research, and educational philosophy.
