3. Atyrau, known as Guryev until 1991, is a city in Kazakhstan,
the administrative center of the Atyrau region. Located in
the Western part of the country, on the banks of the river
Ural (at the base was in a place where the river flows into
the Caspian sea, however, moved away from him as a result
of falling levels of the Caspian sea). Unofficial oil capital of
Kazakhstan.
Atyrau is divided by the Ural, which is part of the border
between Europe and Asia making Atyrau one of two cities in
the world to be located on two different continents. About
80% of the city's population is ethnic Kazakh. The
population is just under 500,000 but note that this is
representative as there are many Ex-PATs in the city who
work or pass through.

About the city
4. Climate
Climatically Atyrau can be rather dramatic with temperatures over 40 degrees in the summer
and below -30 in winter. Wind is an important feature with many days of winds sweeping in off
the steppe. Not much rainfall during the year but when it does rain it does cause some issues
with mud and general getting around. Many days in the year see blue sky and sunshine.

5. Atyrau was established on the shores of the Yaik River,
renamed the Ural by Russian Empress Catherine the
Great after the Pugachev Rebellion. The change
liquidated any legacy of the uprising and memories of
Stepan Razin, one of its leaders who captured the city in
1667-1668.
The city started to grow and expand significantly with
the development of the oil industry and construction of
the first refineries and oil equipment plant in the
country. The fishing industry – the occupation that
attracted people to the small city and gave it a boost –
never lagged, however, as Atyrau is also home to
Kazakhstan’s biggest fish cannery. The importance of
fish and oil in locals’ life is symbolized in the city’s
emblem – two sturgeons and an oil rig.

attention of not only geologists and paleontologists, but also people
who are looking for encounters with unusual manifestations of
nature, mysterious caves, bizarre snow-white rocks and just love
hiking adventures. Walking in these quiet places, far from the usual
civilized world, you can easily find fragments of fossilized ancient
animals, and if you are lucky-even a black shark tooth or, say, the
spine of a dinosaur.

easily get to the desired place in the city. The program will create the shortest correct
route. You can see what kind of public transport you need, which way to go or order an
acceptable taxi. The app is much more convenient than Google Maps.
