This document describes the key quantum numbers used in writing electron configurations: L for total orbital angular momentum, Ml for total magnetic quantum number, S for total intrinsic spin quantum number, Ms for total spin magnetic quantum number, and J for total angular momentum quantum number. While these rules reliably predict ground states, they only erratically agree with experiments for ordering higher energy levels.
