Eligibility Criteria
Assistive Technology can provide adaptations that help
people with disabilities perform tasks at home, work,
and play. All individuals with or without a disability,
including senior citizens and military veterans, are
eligible to receive a Basic Assistive Technology
Assessment. Residents of all jurisdictions are eligible.
Outcome
Following the Basic Assistive Technology Assessment,
ServiceSource will provide an individualized written
report with recommendations.
Duration of Assessment
Assessments will be approximately one hour in length.

Mason University Helen Kellar Institute for Human disAbilities, with equipment
funding from the Fairfax Civitan Club and the Civitan Chesapeake District
Foundation for Children with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.
ServiceSource offers Basic Assistive Technology
Assessments to help students and adults with
disabilities, and others, identify and try technologies
that can improve their access, participation,
performance and independence. Assessments are
provided at no charge.
Through a Basic Assistive Technology Assessment a
staff person will:
 Assess an individual’s functional needs
 Provide a knowledgeable resource of the types
of items available on the market
 Recommend technology based on an
individual’s preferences, abilities, and the
tasks to be accomplished
 Conduct trials or demonstrations to allow an
individual to validate the effectiveness of the
technology in everyday life
 Refer individuals to additional support
services to provide training or technical
support
 Link individuals to financing to obtain items
 Reassess needs over time as tasks or abilities
change
The process will be guided by each individual’s
preferences and the focus will be on finding the right
technology or other support for each need.
