This document discusses the important skills and personalities for working in the tourism and hospitality industry. It lists key skills like communication, problem solving, language abilities, organizational skills, and customer relation skills. Every employee needs to demonstrate these skills and personalities to provide quality service and ensure customer satisfaction, which builds the company's image and relationships. A survey found that BScT students often lack language abilities, teamwork skills, and strong customer relations.
2. List of all the skills important to work in tourism and hospitality industry;
• Communication skills; being able to communicate effectively is the most
important of all life skills, this involves the ability to use different skills such as
listening, non-verbal communication, clarity and concision, friendliness,
confidence, empathy, open mindedness, respect, choosing right medium of
communication and feedback.
• Problem solving skills; these are the skills that help to determine the source of the
problem and find its solution, some of the key problem solving skills includes of
active listening, analysis, research, decision making and creativity
• Language skills, these are set of capabilities that allow an individual to understand
and produce spoken or written language for proper and effective interpersonal
communication, so it includes of the following skills; listening, speaking, reading
and writing.
• Organizational skills; refer to your ability to stay focused on different task and use
your time, energy, strength and mental capacity effectively and efficiently in order
to achieve the desired outcome.
• Customer relation skills; this includes the ability to make a good impression with
customers, communicate well and abilities to solve customer related problems.
3. List of all the personalities important to work in tourism and
hospitality industry;
• Flexibility; this is a persona trait that describes how one can cope or adopt
with changes in situations and think about problems in a creative way.
Normally when unexpected event occurs.
• Patience; this is the ability to remain calm when dealing with to a difficult
or annoying situation, task or person a patient response example a rude
customers.
• Empathy; is defined as a sign of emotional intelligence, an emotional
ability which helps people understand as if they were their own feelings. In
other words it is the ability to put yourself in someone shoes.
• Honesty; being able to tell the truth, thus a tourism and hospitality person is
required to be someone who is truthful.
• Personal appearance; is a general outlook of a person, a tourism person
requires to look in a way that a client feel safe to be served with.
4. The line of work which does each skill and personality is important and the reason
why each skill and personality is important is as follows:
• Tourism industry is a broader industry which comprises of all tangible
goods or products productions and services. Tourism industry has gone far
to hotels, restaurant and all food and beverage production as well as
tourism attraction management which involve both wildlife and cultural
attractions. Therefore almost every country in the world is working hard to
improve this sector since it has recently contributed to the increase of
income to countries, so this has made it to be so sensitive industry which
require people be with different skills and personalities as mentioned
above, every employee is positioning him or herself in a good site if he or
she has more or almost all skills and personalities above, example a tour
guide is required to have just to mention a few, patience, a good personal
appearance, hygiene and empathy when guiding victors in a tour which this
same applies to a waiter who is required to have those skills when serving
clients. Hence being a manager or a low level employee in tourism
industry, who have the opportunity to contact with the customers directly,
you require all the above skills and personalities.
5. The reason why it is important is as follows;
• It leads to customer satisfaction which is the objective of an active
organization in tourism industry.
• It creates a good image of an organization.
• It helps to create, maintain and restore a good relationship between the
employee themselves and with the public.
• It also helps the production and provision of quality services and products
6. A little survey from students department about skills and personalities, was
conducted in BScT 3 and the following was the result;
• 25% of BScT 3 students have skills while the rest of are lacking these
skills however the survey has indicated that 75% are aware of the skill but
wonderful enough the high percent of students are lacking these skills.
Skills that most of BScT 3 students lack, includes of the following:
• Language skills (both in written and speaking skills).
• Teamwork and commitment skills.
• Customer relation skills.
