Evidence and APA
The third core writing skill of the Capella Writing Standards is related to evidence.
Capella Writing Standard
Integrate appropriate evidence
Integrate into text appropriate use of scholarly sources, evidence, and citation style.
Developing your skills as a scholar requires you to consider your research methods, source credibility, and synthesis of complex information. Ensuring you are able to integrate appropriate evidence in your texts will better situate you for success and support your development as a scholar.
APA Style and Format
Capella requires that learners use APA Style to provide attribution to the authors of external sources. APA promotes the abilities to paraphrase and summarize, create concise texts, and develop in-text citations and reference pages that will connect your readers to important sources of evidence.
APA has developed a virtual representation of the APA manual on Academic Writer, a tool that you can use to support you in following APA format. All Capella learners are provided with a subscription to Academic Writer.
Consistency in the order, structure, and format of a paper allows readers to focus on a paper’s content rather than its presentation.
To format a paper in APA Style, writers can typically use the default settings and automatic formatting tools of their word-processing program or make only minor adjustments.
The guidelines for paper format apply to both student assignments and manuscripts being submitted for publication to a journal. If you are using APA Style to create another kind of work (e.g., a website, conference poster, or PowerPoint presentation), you may need to format your work differently in order to optimize its presentation, for example, by using different line spacing and font sizes. Follow the guidelines of your institution or publisher to adapt APA Style formatting guidelines as needed.

EDU-535 Lecture 3
Learning How to Research
Introduction
In Topic 1, you learned about the importance of scholarship and a little about what it takes to transition from student to scholar. In this Topic, you will learn about the heart of scholarship: Research. Learning how to research is critical to your transition from student to scholar, because it is a significant component of how you master the knowledge in your field, which will in turn equip you to contribute to the improvement of practice in your field. Review the learning objectives for this Topic within the course syllabus and use the following lecture, which is about the role of research in scholarship, to accomplish them.
What Do We Mean by Research?
You may have used the term
research
in many different scenarios and settings. You may have had to research locations of companies offering a particular service you needed, or maybe you had to research different schools before deciding to enroll at GCU. The term research is often used loosely in informal settings to mean, as illustrated in the previous examples,
the search for information
−but what does research mean in an academic setting? What does research mean in graduate study? What does research mean to the aspiring scholar wishing to improve the field in which they work?
According to
The Free Dictionary
, researchis defined as "scholarly or scientific investigation or inquiry." A Google search defines
research
as "the systematic investigation into and study of materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions." The first definition uses the term
scholarly,
which, as you learned in Topic 1, refers to a "learned person" who more than likely has mastered a particular discipline. The second definition mentions "the study of materials and sources." This could include people, theories, concepts, studies, and a variety of other sources. Both definitions mention "systematic or scientific investigation," which means an orderly and logical process that is carried out in the act of research. Analyzing both definitions sho.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

1. ASA citation format
ASA refers to American sociological association. ASA citation format is a mode of paper
formatting provided by the organization to guide student taking sociology in proper referencing
and citation as they write their essays and papers. Students majoring or pursuing master’s degree
in sociology are highly encouraged to study the complete guide, as it features mechanics of style,
editorial styles, guidelines for presenting and organizing the content, and has more detailed
information on scholarly article referencing.
ASA citation format is fully committed to proper authorship crediting and adequate authorship
attribution as dictated by ASA code of ethics. ASA citation format stipulates that in any
presentation, publication, or teaching practice, the sociologist must identify and give credit and
reference the author when they use material or data from other person’s written work, whether
unpublished or published, or available electronically. ASA citation format code of ethics also
stipulate that in presentation, teaching and practice, publication and service, the sociologist have
to provide acknowledgment and reference the use of others work, Regardless of whether the
work is paraphrased or quoted verbatim. They are not supposed to present other works as there’s
whether the work is electronically available, published or unpublished.
ASA citation format finally stipulates that in-text citation must include author’s last name and
the year of publication. The page number has to be added when one quotes directly from others
or when referring to specific content. A reference list appears in a separate page headed
references. All references cited in the paper should be listed in the reference page
