Defining Humanities may a difficult task; however, it can be said in a few words that
it is an academic discipline which deals with the study of the ‘Human Condition’,
utilizing methodologies that are usually analytical, critical or speculative. The wide
range of subjects that come under the umbrella term of Humanities range from
anthropology, History, Geography, Political Science, Sociology, Psychology, English,
Hindi and Education. Thus, it is a broad category encompassing several disciplines
that cannot be studied under the natural sciences. Humanities are a field of
academics that deals with a scientific study of the human society and culture.
Humanities degrees are required in technology too, as they give context to the
world we operate in our day to day life. The field of Arts, briefly, refers to the
expression of creativity found in the societies of humans and culture. Humanities
and Arts are central to all human cultures since the beginning of human civilization.
Their study can facilitate deeper intercultural understanding and lay the
groundwork for a civically engaged life. These can also prepare the students to think
critically, act creatively, and succeed in a rapidly and constantly changing world.

Liberal studies is the speedily moving and widely accepted model of education today. Liberal Studies is not about being liberal about studies or assignment or attendance or exam. The institute may provide flexibility but it is about liberating the mind, knowledge, wisdom, thinking and creativity. In other words, making mind, knowledge and creativity shackle free and not limiting education or a course only to a specific topic or educating self for a particular profession only and nothing out of it. Liberal studies has endeavoured to break the water tight compartment of education, especially university degree education which limited a student in terms of knowledge but also in following a profession and understanding other aspects of the world. Liberal studies focuses on skills, human life, critical thinking and creativity and thus broadens the choice of profession and occupation a person can take with a better understanding of self and world. Mahatma Gandhi the spiritual leader of India developed and practiced a philosophy of education called ‘Nai Talim’ [translated as new training or learning] which focused on all round development of humans like various skills, knowledge, arts, wisdom and above all morality and making them responsible citizens. education. Present paper tries to explore framework for
achieving quality and excellence in higher education by
analysing the various functional aspect of higher educational
system in the country. After extensive literature survey and
analysing the research work of eminent researchers and
thinkers, it is concluded that higher education has become
larger and more central to society and individuals; hence,
there a need to develop framework including different
functional components for performance indicator and
measurement. It is suggested that various enhancement
function should be executed primarily in systems of high
trust, whereas the accountability function has to be
developed to prevent bad quality of institutions and
programs, and thus to protect the beneficiaries i.e. students
and society. Universities need to be consciously and
explicitly managing the processes associated with the
creation of their knowledge assets and to recognise the value
of their intellectual capital to their continuing role in society
and in a wider global marketplace for higher education.
