Marion Quick describes his process of watercolor
painting as “a search for the power of an image
and the depiction of it through the transparency of
watercolor on paper. For me, no other medium has this
particular quality.”
Quick’s watercolors have been described as
“palpable” in regards to the degree of resolution of
his subject matter, which is most often landscape and
architectural images of one of his favorite locales:
far West Texas. Having grown up in the small town
of Marfa, Texas, in the ’50s and ’60s, his mental index
was forged by the vast horizon, clarity of light and the
austere quality of the landscape.
“This area of the world fascinates me, and so I reach
into that to draw on the depth and power that the
imagery has,” says the artist. “The far West Texas
landscape has a figurative quality that I love to
explore. The nature and architecture of the area
that I depict has a timelessness that is loaded with
intrigue and mystery. It dictates the approach of how
I render it in watercolor. I try to communicate this
in my painting.”
Quick is represented by RS Hanna Gallery in
Fredericksburg, Texas, and beginning in 2016, The
Marfa Book Company in Marfa will also carry his
work.
