After the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, a tsunami warning system was developed since much of the region previously lacked sea level monitoring equipment. The new system enables tsunamis to be detected so residents can be warned and evacuate more safely. It is important for the warning system to quickly analyze earthquakes to shorten the time between a tsunami being generated and residents being notified so they have more time to evacuate safely. The warnings also need to be effectively communicated to all residents using multiple technologies to ensure everyone receives the notification.
