- Art brings beauty to our world. Art helps children (and even adults) express themselves through various mediums and styles. It has the ability to lessen stress, by letting the artist take out their frustrations on canvas or paper. It stimulates the mind to think beyond what we see and hear to our inner emotions. Without art we would be left to a technologically cold world. I’ve chosen two drawing that I have done in the past. The first is a colored pencil drawing of a young woman in a relaxed position while a slightly cuddly tiger is looking at the viewer daring them to disturb its mistress. The other is a pencil drawing of a Sabrina the Teenage witch after she has turned her cat Salem into a dragon. Art is so much more than lines on a paper; it has the ability to transport us to a different time or even a different world.
- Art is more than paintings on a canvas or drawings on paper; it includes many forms including photography. It allows us to capture landscapes, animals, and people. It immortalizes places and events or even life experiences. Through art we are able to express our views of the ever changing world around us. I’ve chosen two photographs I have taken and two drawings previously done. The first photograph is of a landscape of the Rockies near Telluride, Colorado. The second photograph is of a large crow at one of the sites at the Grand Canyon, in the photo he is looking at the viewer possibly contemplating on how to get more scraps of food. The first drawing is a colored pencil drawing of a horse walking towards the water with surrounding hills and mountainous landscape. The second drawing is an oil pastel of a small Siamese kitten looking curious, sitting by a shelf in what looks like part of a kitchen.
- When it comes to art, the artist has a wide variety of mediums to choose from. From paints to pastels to clay and glass. Artists don’t just stick with the common mediums they have even gone digital, using a computer. Some artists have even combined mediums to create texture and depth to their works. When it comes to creating art the possibilities of what to use are endless, if you can imagine it, then anything can become art. In a world filled with technology it is easy to overlook art as superfluous. But art has a place in society and the world as a way of expression. For example, Hannah Höch’s work Cut With a Kitchen Knife Dada through Last Weimar Beer Belly Cultural Epoch of Germany is a form a propaganda which is also a form of art. She arranged her work in “an eclectic mixture of cutout photos in seemingly haphazard fashion. On closer inspection, however, the viewer can see that the artist carefully placed photographs of some of her fellow Dadaists among images of Marx, Lenin, and other revolutionary figures. She promoted Dada in prominently placed cutout lettering. Juxtaposing the heads of German military leaders with exotic dancers’ bodies providing the wickedly humorous critique central to much of Dada.” (Kleiner, 2010, p. 707). Art is important in today’s ever expanding world as a way of expression.
