COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course offers a visual and historical survey from the dawn of the Renaissance through the modern
period. Emphasis is placed on the visual analysis of painting, sculpture, and architecture as well as the
relationship of the artists to the society of the period.
This course is a Gordon Rule course in which the student is required to demonstrate college-level
writing skills through multiple writing assignments. A minimum grade of C required if used to satisfy
Gordon Rule requirement.
OBJECTIVES
§ Identify works of art by style, artist, period, and medium.
§ Place artworks with social and historical context.
§ Expand art vocabulary, including architectural terms.
§ Identify architectural elements in conjunction with specific cultural developments.
§ Compare and contrast various works of art.
§ Understand a historical timeline and its relationship to the art of the time.

Edition
STUDENT EVALUATION FORMULA
Canvas Discussion Posts 20%
§ You will be required to post at least twice on weekly discussion boards.
§ Your first (original) and reply posts will both be due by 11:59 PM EST each Sunday
evening.
§ Your reply post must respond to a classmate’s first, original post.
§ Discussion boards will lock out at 11:59 PM EST each Sunday evening.
Canvas Assignments & Reading Quizzes 25%
§ You will be required to submit various written or multimedia submissions throughout
the term.
§ Your submissions will be due by 11:59 PM EST each Sunday evening.
§ Submissions will close at 11:59 PM EST each Sunday evening and no late work will be
accepted.
§ Additionally, a quiz will be given on each week’s assigned reading.
Exams 30%
§ Two long-form examinations will be administered, once every 8 weeks.
§ Examinations will not be cumulative in their subject matter and will be open-note &
open-book.
Research Opportunity 25%
§ One four-page written research project is required.
§ Proper MLA or APA-style citation should be used for all written assignments.
§ One draft may be turned in for the professor’s perusal two weeks prior to the due date.
§ Plagiarism = A grade of zero. No exceptions.
§ Wikipedia as a source = A grade of zero. No exceptions.
§ A detailed research project description will be distributed at Week 4.

100 – 90% = A
89 – 80% = B
79 – 70% = C
69 – 60% = D
59 – 0% = F

LATE WORK POLICY
No late work will be accepted; this includes both assignments and assessments. No make-up tests are
available without explicit consent of instructor, which will only be granted in case of documented
extreme emergency.
ACADEMIC HONESTY
Plagiarism is intellectual theft and will not be tolerated. Presentation of the ideas and words of others
as if they are your own work constitutes plagiarism. This includes use of material from books, the
Internet or any other source. The student is expected to perform his or her own research and present
his or her own thoughts.
Direct use of another author’s words or ideas, as well as paraphrasing must be cited. Each student is
expected to be in complete compliance with the college policy on academic honesty as set forth in the
college catalog and the student handbook.
Plagiarism in any work will result in a grade of zero for that assignment.
STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES
Students with disabilities who qualify for academic accommodations must provide a notification from
Access Services and discuss specific needs with the professor, preferably during the first two weeks of

  • 1. The History of Art II: ARH2051 Spring Term 2021 • Professor Will Adams • wadams5@valenciacollege.edu Online - Office hours by appointment • (407) 970-5517 (Do NOT text this number!) COURSE DESCRIPTION This course offers a visual and historical survey from the dawn of the Renaissance through the modern period. Emphasis is placed on the visual analysis of painting, sculpture, and architecture as well as the relationship of the artists to the society of the period. This course is a Gordon Rule course in which the student is required to demonstrate college-level writing skills through multiple writing assignments. A minimum grade of C required if used to satisfy Gordon Rule requirement. OBJECTIVES § Identify works of art by style, artist, period, and medium. § Place artworks with social and historical context. § Expand art vocabulary, including architectural terms. § Identify architectural elements in conjunction with specific cultural developments. § Compare and contrast various works of art. § Understand a historical timeline and its relationship to the art of the time. REQUIRED TEXT Fred S. Kleiner, Gardner’s Art Through the Ages, A Concise Global History, 4th Edition STUDENT EVALUATION FORMULA Canvas Discussion Posts 20% § You will be required to post at least twice on weekly discussion boards. § Your first (original) and reply posts will both be due by 11:59 PM EST each Sunday evening. § Your reply post must respond to a classmate’s first, original post. § Discussion boards will lock out at 11:59 PM EST each Sunday evening. Canvas Assignments & Reading Quizzes 25% § You will be required to submit various written or multimedia submissions throughout the term. § Your submissions will be due by 11:59 PM EST each Sunday evening. § Submissions will close at 11:59 PM EST each Sunday evening and no late work will be accepted. § Additionally, a quiz will be given on each week’s assigned reading.
  • 2. Exams 30% § Two long-form examinations will be administered, once every 8 weeks. § Examinations will not be cumulative in their subject matter and will be open-note & open-book. Research Opportunity 25% § One four-page written research project is required. § Proper MLA or APA-style citation should be used for all written assignments. § One draft may be turned in for the professor’s perusal two weeks prior to the due date. § Plagiarism = A grade of zero. No exceptions. § Wikipedia as a source = A grade of zero. No exceptions. § A detailed research project description will be distributed at Week 4. ACADEMIC HONESTY Plagiarism is intellectual theft and will not be tolerated. Presentation of the ideas and words of others as if they are your own work constitutes plagiarism. This includes use of material from books, the Internet or any other source. The student is expected to perform his or her own research and present his or her own thoughts. Direct use of another author’s words or ideas, as well as paraphrasing must be cited. Each student is expected to be in complete compliance with the college policy on academic honesty as set forth in the college catalog and the student handbook. Plagiarism in any work will result in a grade of zero for that assignment.
