• What is argumentative paragraph?
Argumentative writing is sometime called as Analytical Exposition,
which is to persuade the reader or listener that something is the case –
whether the case is right or not.
• How is argumentative paragraph structured?
Generic Structure of Argumentation:
1) Thesis (Issue + Thesis)/ (position + preview)
Issue: introduces topic
Position: indicates writer’s position & outline the main argument)
2) Arguments (Argument 1, Argument 2,….)
Point: restates main argument outlined in Preview
Elaboration: develops and supports each Point/Argument
3) Reiteration: restates writer’s position

4. The language features of Argumentative
Paragraph
• Focus on one particular topic: generic human and non-human Participants
For example: ‘the capital city of Indonesia’, ‘people’, and ‘skyscrapers’
• Use of modality: ‘must’, ‘should’, ‘will’, ‘can’
• For example: ‘the new capital city must be strategically located in the centre of
Indonesia.’
• Use of simple present tense
• For example: ‘…which is estimated to cost the economy some 100 trillion rupiah
($10 billion) annually Use of relational verbs’
• ‘It has a population of more than 10 million people’
• Use of internal Conjunction to stage argument
• For example: ‘for three reason’  ‘First of all’, second, third,…  ‘In addition’ 
‘Finally’ ‘To conclude’

• Bergerak dari pernyataan personal ke pernyataan impersonal.
