          Assignment 2
    Are You Paying Attention?
Let’s will visit following
    businesses in Mumbai, India.
• A medical shop
• A hotel
• A Sari shop
• A Gold Jewelry shop
• A Cloth store
• A Hospital
A Medical Shop
• In the following slides, you can see
pictures of two medical stores adjacent to
  each other.

• While one attracts lots of customers, the
other does not. Could you think of any
  reasons?
Few Possible Reasons…

• Better Lighting: one on the left is better
  lit.
• Merchandise on Display: One on the left
has a display while the other does not.
• More Space for Customers: There is
more room for customers to stand.
• Sign Board: There is sign board outside
  the stores.
Observations
A consultancy providing guidance to the
stores to make changes so as to have
better profits would be a blessing to them.
A Hotel
• Do you know that majority of motels in US
are owned by Indians from specific area in
  Gujarat state of India?
• 21,000 of 53,000 hotels and motels in US
are owned by Gujratis. That is 42% of US
  hospitality market.*
  * Ref: Times of India article dated October 16, 2006
Similarly, in India, Udipi region in
Karnataka state is the home of majority of
  Indian hotel owners.
 Factors contributing to their success:
• Being in the business for generations.
• Good understanding of local culture and
  tastes.
• Treating and training the staff
  affectionately.
• Never criticizing other businesses in the
  same domain.
Observations
• There are no outlets to buy books,
  handbags, cosmetics, movie-music DVDs
or toys for kids etc. in the hotel premises.
A Sari shop
• In India, sari is the garment which is still
most popular amongst women of previous
  generation.
• Even if they have to buy one sari, women
will go through many shops and check out
  varieties available in market.
• Since it is hot in here for significant part of
the year, it is made sure by many
  businesses that customers are offered
cold water or other drinks as soon as they
arrive and that AC is on. Therefore, when
customers enter the shop, they feel good
and stay longer in turn increasing the sale.
• In many smaller towns there are no ACs.
Observations
• It is not common here for people to go for
  regular health checkup. Since women
spend ample amount of time in a shop, a
small area where their blood pressure,
body weight, fat percent etc. is measured
can give them a chance of better health. A
hospital, fitness center etc. can tie up with
  shops to provide these services.
A Gold Jewelry shop
• India is largest consumer of the gold in the
world. Women love the jewelry. It is also
  considered a good investment option.
• Of course, the purchase are done for
women. Most of the times, men come
  along only to make payments.
Observations
• Banks can tie up with the shops and pitch
the customers about the lockers where
they can keep their Jewelry safe.
A Cloth store
• The stores targeting the family have
departments for men, women and kids.
• Indians generally get married only once. So, it is
a big occasion for the family and perhaps most
  significant in terms of spending.
• There is a tradition, in which, before marriage
the family members of bride and groom come
together and buy Jewelry, clothing etc. for them.
Observations
• Professionals well versed with latest
fashion and availability of things, can help
the bride, groom and anyone else
  interested in selecting dresses, Jewelry
etc. Currently only celebrities and people
with very high income avail these kinds of
  services.
A Hospital
• Government hospitals in Mumbai do an
  incredible job of providing medical
services to community at far less cost
  compared to private hospitals.
• However, owing to huge number of
patients and visitors, there are instances
of crimes like child theft, which the hospital
staff fail to avoid at times.
Observations
• A personal electronic safety device which
will alert parents about any movement of
child will a go a long way in avoiding the
  turmoil caused to parents.
• A personal security personnel cum helper
can help mother and child as well as avoid
  unfortunate instances stated above.
Thank you for watching.
