Problem gambling is an addiction similar to substance abuse where the gambler has difficulty controlling their gambling behavior even as it has negative consequences. There are three stages of gambling addiction: the winning phase, losing phase, and desperate phase where life is out of control. Signs of a problem include gambling longer or more than intended, using income meant for bills to gamble, and thoughts of losses causing issues like depression. Gambling addiction is treatable with the right support systems and desire to change unhealthy behaviors. Those struggling can seek help from organizations like the Community Addictions Management Program.

This document discusses drug and alcohol addiction, gambling, and society's response to these issues. It outlines the harms of substance abuse and addiction, such as health risks and economic costs. It then discusses Islamic teachings on these topics, including verses from the Quran that prohibit intoxicants and gambling. The Prophet Muhammad advocated for abstaining from these behaviors and defined intoxicating substances broadly. Companions followed this prohibition strictly. Gambling addiction destroys lives by consistently causing financial and relationship problems as well as mental health issues like depression.
